“GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

Fairview is a comfortable, country-like hotel just a few minutes walk from downtown Nairobi. Security is tight (an important consideration), food is adequate colonial fair, and rooms are clean and basic. We've stayed there several times and have no complaints. Not luxury, but US middle class.

About 10 years - gardens are still beautiful, security top notch, staff, food and service brilliant.

Had one of the cheaper rooms, which was more than adequate, duvets, crisp linen, tv, lots of storage AND about 6 double sockets! My only gripe would be the lack of toiletries (liquid soap only).

On the one hand the photos make the hotel look very luxurious. The public rooms are tastefully decorated, however, the accommodation is very basic - bed, desk, bath and shower. Despite an effort to have a modern clean look, the feel is more akin to visiting an elderly relative who lives out in the country. One very irritating factor was the staff start cleaning and sweeping from 7am.

The food is tasty, but expect to pay hotel prices. Glass of house red is £6.20, mains are reasonable at £12, starters and deserts ~ £8.

The gym is functional but very small with limited options.

Last time I was in Nairobi I stayed at the Crown Plaza. I'll be going back there on my next visit.

A question - is this a country hotel or a business hotel? At the moment it is neither.

Room Tip: Block 5 has a lot of background noises.

It was a pleasure welcoming you back for your 8th visit with us. We sincerely appreciate your feedback.

You will be glad to know that we have made a change to the sweeping times and we are renovating our gym in November this year.

As for your other points, you booked an economy room at $180 which we think is great value. We do have several room categories – perhaps you can consider upgrading next time?

Our food and beverage is priced competitively.

I think it is fairly clear from the 700 Fairview Hotel reviews on TripAdvisor that we have a winning combination of beautiful gardens, charming buildings, modern rooms and fabulous restaurants.

We do hope you will return for your 9th visit! We hereby offer you a free upgrade on your next visit to one of our suites so we can spoil you with luxury!

This is the second time my wife and I have stayed at the Fairview. It is time to give it the review that it deserves.

Nairobi was the first stop on a 3 ½ week travel experience through Africa. Given our positive experience previously (in 2010) we decided to book a room for three nights to start off our time in Africa.

LOCATION:
The hotel is conveniently located in relation to the main airport and downtown Nairobi. One of the main reasons for choosing this hotel were the lush grounds and enhanced security. It truly is an oasis away from the traffic and noise prevalent in Nairobi.

SERVICE:
The level of service at this hotel is excellent. My wife and I stayed at this hotel previously in 2010 and the service has been maintained to a high standard. We were warmly and promptly greeted at reception (at 4am in the morning I might add). Throughout our stay, the level of friendliness and service exhibited by various staff members was impressive.

ROOMS:
We had a First Class room which I would recommend. It is in a separate building away from the main building where reception and restaurants are located. The room is simple but well laid out and comfortable. My only gripe would be that given the rate charged for the room, it should be expected that hair conditioner and body lotion would be made available (which is is not). There is a safe in the room and although wifi is provided, the signal can be varied at times.

DINING:
We had a meal in a couple of the restaurants, one of which the new menu was being introduced that day. Selection and quality was good.

This is a very nice hotel that provides a high standard of service and amenities for the weary traveller to prepare you for your next journey whether it be another flight or a safari.

We have stayed here in the past and will definitely stay here again. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Although every room is nice, it is definitely worthwhile to upgrade to a First Class room.

Our favourite hotel in Nairobi. Quiet and very peaceful. Best food in East Africa under the watchful eye of Chef Eamon. Rooms are comfortable. Wifi works. Staff are very pleasant. Gardens are wonderful if you are stuck in the place for a day or so. Very good all round.

Lovely hotel and staff. The room was a bit small and surprised there were no toiletry items. However, the fitness room was great as was the pool. Food was fabulous especially the breakfast. The gardens were simply amazing. Highly recommend staying here.

We recently stayed here after our safari as a transit point as our flight was the next evening to London, UK. The hotel is located right across from the Israeli Embassy so security is tight but the hotel premises are very safe. It took about 20 minutes to arrive from Wilson airport as there was mild traffic congestion.

We stayed in one of the junior suites which is located across a small road from reception. Key card entry was required through all gates so it felt safe. The grounds are beautiful with lots of greenery and with a sufficient number of restaurants to choose from.

The internet connection was very good, which was a pleasant surprise. The internet was included in the cost of the room.

The room itself was a bit dated, but the bed was very comfortable. We had a nice kitchenette which we didn't end up using as our stay was short. The living room area was nice, but note that there is no door between the bedroom and living room area so noise will travel. The bathroom was sufficiently large but could use renovation. There was no door on the shower, so the bathroom did tend to get quite wet if you had a shower.

The hotel is a nice sanctuary from the rest of Nairobi, but I would note the following could be improved:
- checkout time is 10am which is rather early. As we had an 11:40pm flight to London, we opted to pay the additional half day rate to keep the room until 7pm, which worked for us. However, a 11am or noon checkout time is more normal by western standards (and western standards are obviously the standard to which this hotel is aspiring given the price point and clientele of the hotel)
- as a result of extending our stay until 7pm, we asked for additional bottles of water at reception to brush our teeth (two small bottles are supplied per room and we had run out). That water did not ever come but we believed this was a reasonable request given that we did pay an additional 50%.
- cleanliness could be improved. I found a huge hairball in our room, and it wasn't our hair as the colour of the hair was different. Not acceptable in my opinion.
- there was a noticeable 'gaseous' smell in our bedroom - we couldn't figure out where it was coming from and opening the window did not solve the problem
- our telephone did not work. We tried several times to call the front desk, using the speed dial options as well as the actual extension numbers but ended up having to walk to the front desk for any questions / requests. This was a bit annoying
- this is a minor complaint, but there was no conditioner nor body lotion. At this price point, these toiletries should be included

On the plus side, the breakfast buffet was very good, with an excellent selection of food. The staff were friendly. The pool area and first class lounge were nice. Finally, there was a good giftshop with a good selection of souvenirs at moderate prices.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel, but certain improvements could easily be made, as noted above. However, as our primary concerns were a good sleep in a safe location, I would still give this hotel a '4'.

Room Tip: The junior suites are nice and spacious, if your budget allows.
