“IT'S JUST OKAY”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2012

We arrived in Nairobi early in the morning (2:30AM) and went to the Fairview for a two night stay. The hotel is very safe as it is across the road from the Israeli embassy. It is a guarded complex with lush gardens and truly an oasis in the city. The staff is friendly and the breakfast selection adequate. The rooms are in need of updating. Although the facility is probably four star the rooms are two star. There were no bathroom amenities provided, the standard room was small and had no particular charm.

Room Tip: We were in the main building and it was convenient to be there.

Visited Nairobi with family on our way to Masai mara and stayed at FAIRVIEW for 2 nights.

Location: well, though it is in the middle of city, yet it feels very far off from all activities. There is not much to do nearby. It is in a high security area as some Embassy (I think ISRAEL).

Front desk: no problem. Smooth checkin. Room were given to us as per our request. Rooms are good with good facilities.

Restaurants: there is a garden restaurant with bar. Food quality is good but options are limited. There is another restaurant just nest to the lobby on the ground floor. The ambience there is good but quality of service is somewhat lacking.

Breakfast: nice spread. Good choice.

Others: There is a souvenir shop which sells most of the things pretty expensive. Get your water and other things of basic need from outside.

Taxi: There is a taxi stand just on the gate of the hotel. Safe and reliable. Negotiate the fare before getting in. Take one which has aircon as the pollution levels on the roads is high.

In short, the hotel is good, but in my opinion there are much better choices available in Nairobi.

Room Tip: specify your bed requirement in advance

We stayed at the Fairview for the last 2 nights of our Kenya trip in February as I wanted to see some of what Nairobi had to offer while we were there. We only had 1 evening and then a full day as we were leaving for the airport very early in the morning. As a result of this, we spent hardly any time in the hotel and I massively regret that we didn't. The restaurants on offer all looked beautiful, the gardens were decadently verdant and the pool looked clean and extremely inviting.

It's location is fantastic, it's on the strip where the Israeli embassy is located, so there is plenty of security and I was advised that this is one of the safest places in Nairobi. Tips for things to do in Nairobi - the elephant orphanage is brilliant and my favourite was the Giraffe sanctuary where you can feed and 'kiss' the giraffes!

I paid more to stay here than some of the other hotels were asking for* but it was definately worth it. My advice is to book an extra day to enjoy the hotel!

* I asked for a discount when booking to bring it in line with Crown Plaza and the manager knocked £50 for the 2 nights - there's no harm in asking!!

Stayed here for 2 nights before departing for Zanzibar- very nice, quiet hotel. Clean and comfortable rooms. I stayed here with my husband and 2 kids and only option for us to all stay in one room was one queen bed and pull out couch. Not ideal but they claim that is all they had. Had a great breakfast in the morning- buffet w/ lots of options. Hired a driver for a 1/2 day and visited Elephant orphanage, Giraffe center and Kazuri beads/

I thought the fairview was perfect for a couple night stay. One good thing is that it did not feel like you were in the middle of town even though you were. Overall a very warm and cosy place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the newer rooms not the regular non modern rooms

The staff could not have been more welcoming and friendly. GORGEOUS building - full of all mod cons and yet retains an air of history. Wonderful building and grounds. We were only here for one night, which was a shame, as we were busy around Nairobi, so didn't get to spend as much time at the hotel as we'd have liked. They arranged for us to hire one of their on-site taxis for the afternoon at a good rate and so we could pack a lot into a short amount of time. When we arrived back, the pool was officially closed for the day, but they opened it for us so we could have a swim. Room was fine and the general ambience was FANTASTIC with wonderful grounds too. Breakfast is UNBELIEVABLE! Really gorgeous buffet, but with a home-cooked feel - eggs florentine, waffles, pancakes, fresh fruit, mint tea, hot chocolate etc... EXCELLENT quality. We were sorry to leave and could not recommend this place more highly.

Also a great location - about 20 mins from airport (not in rush hour) and easy access to Giraffe Manor, Carnivore Restaurant and Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage too... Does really feel like a country retreat in the middle of the city!

Room Tip: We had a room in the main house (no 19) - would recommend staying in the main house if possible
