“Lovely spot in crowded Nairobi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

We recently stayed at the Fairmont Norfolk on our way out to Masai Mara. The room was quiet and well appointed. Breakfast on the Terrace was sumptuous and my husband swore his cappuchino was one of the best he has had.
We especially appreciated being able to leave some of our luggage at the hotel since we were limited as to what we could take on safari.
We picked up the luggage and got a "day room" on our way back through Nairobi. Since most long distance flights leave late a night it was nice to shower, repack and have a nap before flying out. I only wish we had time to dine at Tatu, the menu looked fantastic.
Security was on top ofeverything so no worries there at all. An oasis of calm inside the Norfolk.

We spent two nights here before leaving on safari with the hopes of getting ahead of our jet lag. Rooms were small and a little tired but quite all right. The grounds were fine, the service good, the breakfast buffet excellent. We enjoyed many pots of the best coffee we have ever had.

Room Tip: A view of he courtyard would have been nicer then the rooftops and concrete fences we had at the bac...

Lovely setting with old world charm. The service and graciousness of the staff was excellent. We spent two nights/two rooms at The Norfolk before setting off on a safari. One room was good , the other was very disappointing. The sink was leaking with about a three foot puddle, shower had black mold and we had a terrible time with mosquitos in the room. The leak was fixed, they did spray for flying bugs. Mosquitos were throughout the room and seemed to come from the bathroom. Unfortunately the bugs won and by the time I left I had welts over my face and other exposed areas. Not up the usual Fairmont standards.

Dear m ntravelerusa,

Thank you for posting your feedback on your recent visit.

It is always motivating to read that we exceeded your expectations, in particular; our services and most importantly our staff’s graciousness and professionalism.

We have noted your comments in regards to the mosquitoes, which we are addressing with the City Council of Nairobi to find out the breeding source in order to resolve the issue once and for all.

It was our pleasure to host you and we look forward to hosting you again and again.

Thank you

Richard

This is a quiet, lovely oasis in the middle of a noisy big city. Beautiful, park-like grounds, spacious well-maintained rooms, very good restaurant and friendly staff. The birds can be a bit noisy in the morning, but that's much better than hearing car horns and traffic. Hint: Go to the front desk to join their loyalty program and the WiFi is free.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the grounds. Upper ones have balconies and lower ones have a patio.

Fairmont The Norfolk was my home away from home in Nairobi. I spent a total of 6 nights there on and off in September 2013.
The friendly, obliging staff made my stay exceptional and the colonial ambience of the place drips safari history around every corner.
The garden is home to a host of fabulous bird species and the staff put discreet bird feeders within the flourishing kitchen garden, which makes viewing the plethora of local species that inhabit the lush, immaculately maintained grounds really accessible.
My room was fabulous and I was able to rebook it for my second visit. Its biggest plus was the balcony overlooking the lush tropical gardens with a perfect view into the canopy of yet more wonderful birds.
I didn't spend much time in the room itself. The grounds and bar, drew me out.
Oh the joys of watching distance races on the bar tv in the background, in the home of marathon runners.
Another joy of the place is that they make an effort to serve traditional Kenyan dishes, such as ugali, a corn based dish a bit like polenta, but way nicer and potato and pea mash, boma grill. Ah those succulent cuts of lamb, beef and chicken, cooked to perfection and the fabulous fish from Lake Victoria at the Lord Delamere Terrace Restaurant, all wonderful. At Tatu, the upmarket eatery, I had the most divine lobster I've eaten in years. Food presentation is stunning and there's a great local and international wine list to match. Try the minted pinapple juice at the generous buffet breakfast and the wonderful nibbles that are served with drinks at the bar, all made on site, using quality local ingredients.
The coffee is grown within kilometres or even from the kitchen garden, roasted on site and is exceptional.
But I have to come back to the staff; they made my stay!
They remembered me and welcomed me back by name on my second visit.
I felt like a celebrity, or royalty, such was the quality and dedication of their work.
The art of fine dining and silver service is very much alive and well at the Norfolk.
Take time out to interact with the staff and you will be quickly introduced to the vibrant middle class and contemporary culture that is modern Kenya. Historic the Norfolk may be, but its outlook is ever forward and progressive.
It is my favourite hotel in the world and Nairobi is a city worthy of considerable exploration beyond your safari.
No wonder this place has so many celebrity guests!
I can't wait to return and would have extended my stay, but for not being able to get an onward flight back to Australia for weeks!
For the birders amongst you, there are resident glossy ibis, sunbirds, hornbills, bee eaters, superb starlings, malabu storks, tiny finches and more. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Lord Delamere Wing. Room 519, with (smoker's) balcony overlooking the fabulous gardens. It was...

We stayed one night on arrival in Nairobi before starting our safari. We arrived about 10PM and were on the road by 8AM the next day. Given that, we had no time to appreciate, or even discover, all that the hotel had to offer. The room was weel appointed and the bed was comfortable; the shower was wonderful. The food at the breakfast buffet was varied and very good.

Wifi is free for members of the Fairmont President's Club, and we are glad we signed up for the free club prior to our travel, other wise internet access is almost $6 for one hour.

We arrived the evening before the unfortunate event at the Westgate Mall. Upon arrival, a security person went through my purse and carry on bag prior to entering the hotel. Interestingly, our suitcases did not seem to be checked at all.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard are more quiet than those facing out.

In spite of some minor issues on check-in (well, some systems do go down from time to time and you just being lucky to be the one who enjoys the longest registration process). However, everything else went just great. Inner garden of the hotel is awesome (grab a Tusker and enjoy the table right in there). Breakfast is also nice and you should take it on the terrace (weather permitting).
