“would have been good if it wasnt for...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2009

Bathroom was old and a little cramped. looked dirty with brown/yellow stains around the sink area. Tiles on wall around bathtub was very clean with no sign of mould. Toilet seat wouldnt stay up. Room was ok and clean.
Had breakfast in the travellers restaurant and the chair i sat on must have still had wet paint on the armrest and i got black paint on my white sleeves. Waiter saw me noticing my sleeves and just stood there and did nothing and even watched me get myself another chair. Eventually he managed to say "sorry" and then walked away with his pitcher of orange juice... so cant say the service was that great.
We stayed there 2 nights but a week apart. Checking out the first time they charged me around an extra 80 shillings even though room was prepaid 3 months in advance. they said it was because the exchange rate i was charged 3 months ago was different to the exhange rate at check out time and i was paying for the difference. I let it go since it was only 80 shillings. However, for the second night stay a week later, the exchange rate did not go in their favour by over 100 shillings, instead of refunding it they put that as miscellaneous charges. So either way the exchange rate always works in their favour. They didnt hilight this of course. they put the bill in the envelope without showing it to me at the desk. I saw it on the way to the car but couldnt be bothered going back since we had to get to the airport. None of the other lodges we stayed at for the 2 weeks in Kenya tried to charge extra due to exchange rate differences and certainly didnt expect hilton to be so petty.

Not that much choice in Nairobi when you are travelling for business. But the hotel needs a major restoration – nothing has changed since the eighties, and it is not fashionable at all! The very positive things, as I red in the local newspaper when I was there, is that this tall building in the city centre is one of the few that can pass the local regulations regarding fire and emergency exit… Service is a concept nicely put on the wall, but never hit the staff. Forget about the food, better get to the restaurants around the hotel – it is supposed to be a French chef, and if right, he was perhaps chef in a cheap gas station food corner. At the end, a very disappointing experience, but unfortunately, not that much choice for business – Intercontinental near by is even worse…

I had a 3-night stay in a "standard" non-smoking room, one king bed, 6th floor. I saw none of the filth that other posts referred to: my room, bed linens, bathroom and bath towels were all clean. There was no can of bug spray in my room, nor were there mosquitos, ants or cockroaches.

This was a perfectly adequate Western hotel room for Africa. But that's all it was: adequate.

Good points: attentive security inside and out, reliable electricity / hot water / lifts / housekeeping (none of these are ever to be taken for granted in Africa). Most staff were genuinely cheery and friendly. Room service, while slow, was reliable. The price I paid (USD 145) included breakfast.

Bad points: the hotel desperately needs a serious renovation, at least for the rooms. My room was tiny to the point of cramped, with sprung upholstery for the desk chair, worn and frayed carpet, a miniscule bathroom with ancient fixtures, an uncomfortably soft mattress, and the same paper-thin walls that others referred to. The automatic door-closing mechanism guarantees that all room doors slam shut with a boom, including your neighbour's door at 3:00am. The buffet breakfast was pandemonium from both a guest and server / staff perspective. Get there early or get there late, but avoid like the plague 0730 - 0900.

Neutral points: service is to a local standard or perhaps even slightly better. For those who complained bitterly about internet charges, the 24-hour charge for internet in the room (USD 27) is not unusually high, and there is a plethora of cyber cafes in the area. The hotel is very close to the highly recommended Tamarind Restaurant.

We stayed with our 13 yr old son for one night before heading out on Safari and one night on return from Safari. The first room we were in was ok - it was in the tower and was pretty clean, served its purpose. We had 2 single beds and a pull out couch for our son - pull out couch looked ancient/dangerous/not clean so he had one single and my husband and I shared the other. The Hotel's pub had good but expensive food. Our room on the way back was on the pool level. It was dirty and had GIANT flies - only in the bathroom - not sure where they were coming from. We kept the bathroom door shut and that mostly kept them out of the sleeping area. They did provide a can of Raid in the bathroom so we fogged it well and closed the door - they obviously knew of the problem if they're providing bug spray!! Would never stay there again, given the choice, although staff was really nice and it was in the main square so you could walk wherever you wanted to go.

  • Liked — central location, staff was good overall
  • Disliked — old/not clean/giant flies...

I took advantage of points and booked a room for one night, before heading to the airport. The hotel is located in the safest area of the city, and you can enjoy the Masai Market across the street on Saturday. The rooms could use a good upgrading, but I had no complaints in this area. Mine was on the pool level, and had everything I needed after a few weeks in Africa - a hot shower, comfortable bed and flushing toilet! There is a decent pub and restaurant off the lobby, and a nice little cafe to grab coffee and pastry at your leisure. Security is excellent in the hotel - you cannot get in without passing through. The pool area is very nice, as is the restaurant.

My only complaint was the charge for internet in the business center. 1000ksh for one hour of service seemed excessive to me, particularly for HH Members. Though I do have to say that my service never got cut off here, as it did in every internet cafe I encountered throughout Kenya.

Next time I'm in Nairobi, I'll book the Hilton.

Ok, this was my first stay in a Hilton hotel and my last if this one was anything to go by.

The hotel was probably renovated last in the 60's... no seriously.

The bar is full of old people and hookers.

The room itself was shocking for a 5 star hotel. I have stayed in low budget B&B's in England that look better.

The food was generally decent, but I had my worst buffet experience there ever. How do you make every single meal horrible? That my friend is a art!

Staff was generally very friendly so can't find fault there.

...and by the way the bar is extremely overpriced so rather buy some stuff at the 24hour Nakumatt close by.
