We stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairboi for 2 nights before we began our safari. We thought the hotel was VERY nice and comfortable. Plus, the location was great. Very close to the attractions within the city of Nairobi and in the area of town that my guidebook considered the most safe.

We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. They were very welcoming and answered all of our questions. We did not eat there, except breakfast (which was very good), but other members of our traveling group had meals there and thought it was very good.

Overall, we think this is a good choice for a hotel in the city.

“Superb, exceeded all expectations”

InterContinental Nairobi

What a gorgeous hotel! Honestly, from the previous reviews, I was expecting half a construction site on arrival and even thought about re-booking elsewhere. But the Intercontinental was simply superb. I loved every moment I was there.

We checked into a Club Intercontinental room on the 6th floor. They are newly refurbished and extremely modern, comfortable and luxurious. Bathroom amenities were fabulous with everything from fizzy bath bombs to fantastic designer lotions. We had a great free hot breakfast every morning in the Club Lounge, free tea/coffee all day, and free cocktails/wines/spirits from 6-8pm with delicious hot canapes that were so filling we did not need to venture out into the chaotic war-zone of Nairobi to find dinner. It was an absolute oasis of calm and Old World Charm in the hell-hole that is Nairobi. We also did not hear one peep from the supposed renovations. Not a sound.

Entry to the Fitness Club was included and there is a lovely year-round temperature controlled pool.

Most outstanding of all was the faultless service. Staff could not have possibly been more helpful. You ask for a bath towel, they bring three. Ask for more shampoo and they bring a comb, mouthwash, shaving and toothbrushing equipment as well. The staff in the Club Lounge were superb, organising everything from dinner bookings to impromptu tours around Nairobi. The laundry was cleaned to the highest standard - a word of warning though, laundry service is very pricey. Room Service food orders arrived within 10 minutes. Security was fantastic and the staff bent over backwards to make our stay truly memorable.

My advice is to book early and look around for the best rates. We booked a $295 room at Christmas time for $180 which was incredible value for money compared to most other 5-star places around town. Go there and stay in an Intercontinental Club room, you will be impressed!

“Renovations Renovations Renovations....”

InterContinental Nairobi

OK, I'm a fan of the Priority Club loyalty scheme, and so staying in the Intercontinental when in Nairobi is a must but please when are you going to finish those renovations??

I've been staying in the Intercontinental in Nairobi when in Nairobi on business for the last six years. I always book the Executive Floor, as having access to the lounge sure has its benefits. The rooms are a good size, and for those of you who are fans of big bath towels this is your hotel.

The renovations have been going on in the hotel now for nearly a year, and what work that has been carried out sure is an improvement. But when the hotel issues you with ear plugs it kind of makes you think? "Please excuse the noise from the renovations currently taking place... " a in room letter advises. Back in February, we were advised that the works would be complete in September. Now in October it is still continuing. I'm eagerly awaiting the opening of the new Club Lounge - now reckon on February 2007 !

The staff are great though, friendly and attentive. Check out the breakfast - a real "Fat Boys" occassion with plenty of choice. There is a good selection of evening restaurants. I can really recommend the Indian, which has recently introduced a new menu. Open to view kitchen, means that they have nothing to hide.

The rooms have recently had WiFi internet connections made available. The connections can be a bit hit and miss, something that is a little annoying when you have paid US$ 20.00 for a 24 period.

We stayed at the Nairobi in early Sep and were surprised by the dated decor and average facilities and food. After our safari and beach holiday we chose to stay at the Hilton which was less expensive, but far superior in terms of decor and comfort.

The Intercontinental is situated in Nairobi's city centre - probably the safer and nicer part of the city. Its a very comfortable 4 or 5*. We used this hotel as a stopover before flying home the next morning. The Panari (I think thats the correct name) is closer to the airport but much more expensive and looks a bit tack from the outside. There are no hotels in and around Jomo Kenyatta Airport. The Intercontinental shuttle costs $16 to the airport ( you need to book it in advance) or you can take a hotel contracted taxi for $16 also. Leave yourself plenty of time to get to the airport the traffic is crazy in Nairobi.
The security is pretty tight at this hotel with guards at the barrier, door and on each floor but I believe this is quite common in Nairobi. There is a choice of 2 or 3 restaurants at the hotel and you can expect tourist prices, expensive ! We had booked a deluxe room but were lucky enough to be upgraded to a superior deluxe as the hotel was pretty busy with some sort of conference.
If you're looking for a unique or african feel to a hotel then this not the place for you. We found it a welcome change though after touring around Kenya for 2 weeks.
