“good place for a nairobi visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

I've stayed at the Intercontinental several times while on vacation with my grandson. We've always had a comfortable room, sometimes with an interesting view. The hotel restaurants are very pleasant...good food, very helpful staff and a nice place to take a young boy...they even had a hamburger and fries that passed his inspection! The gift shop has a nice selection of Kenyan beads and crafts, unlike the stuff in most hotel shops.

Some of our pre-trip concerns appeared to be justified when, on arrival, the layout and decor in the reception area appeared to be a bit outdated and jaded; not in disrepair or worn-out, just a little past its best-before date.

Since this was our first experience in Nairobi, the security check (mirrors to view the van's undercarriage) our vehicle underwent each time we entered the hotel premises to a bit of getting used-to. Being aware of the low but persistent threat of terrorist attacks in Kenya, it was easy to conclude that one should endure and even encourage such minor inconveniences.

Check-in was efficient and rooms were decent and clean. Rooms were well-appointed but a hotel of this class and cost should really, really, not be charging such stiff fees for guests' internet access.

Breakfast in the Pool Terrace restaurant was consistently excellent in selection and preparation.
Our big problem with the Intercontinental was the theft, from the room, of a shirt. The fact that the item was missing was pretty obvious to the affected family member as soon as we returned to our rooms from an outing. It seemed obvious that it must have been taken by the house cleaning staff who accessed the room during our absence.
Eventually, we had the Duty Manager, Head of Security and the head of the house-cleaning staff accompany us to our room to go through our luggage to make sure that the item was not merely misplaces. It was not misplaced; it had clearly disappeared.
We understood the management's reluctance to admit the obvious but we eventually came to resent their outpour of tiresome platitudes about "ongoing investigations...", "...looking into it...", "...we are still looking for the shirt...".
We will neither patronise nor recommend this hotel in the future.

The Intercontinental, at Nairobi is located in the center of the business district. Checked in with great expectations - though not all of them were met. A good property as far as location is concerned. Fairly good restaurants, but the rooms were a bit disappointing, with the bath fixtures coming loose and leaky. A bit of more tidiness would have done good. The bath fittings could be replaced with ones that do not leak and that are not scary to handle, teh ones in my room felt like they would come out! but other wise not bad. Good pool, average food for an Indian in teh Indian restaurant Bandhini.

I stay very often in Nairobi and of all the Hotels, this must be the safest of Hotel to stay in. From a Security perspective, this must be the best. The hotel is tired but I was told that there is a refurbishment plan in place. I was fortunate enough to get a refurbished guest room. Wow! What a difference a little thought can make. The room looks totally different. The All Day Dining Restaurant really needs a face lift, but the staff are fantastic and look after your eery need. a must to try is the Indian Restaurant probably has the bet food in Nairobi. The Concierge team are great and are really knowledgeable. Keep it up and I look forward to the old lady getting a facelift. If you treat the public spaces in the same way you h

The hotel is very comfortable and the people are very friendly. I had no problem with the service or amenities (other than the shower that scolds you then freezes you every now and again - not unbearable though), but seeing the prices of food on their menus made me angry. To the point that I refused to order from them.
All the staff was welcoming and friendly and happy to serve. It is well worth getting the executive package and making use of the executive lounge. It's still over priced but its much cheaper than not having it. The package includes unlimited wifi (essential when on a business trip), access to the executive lounge which offers snacks all day and happy hour every evening. I made the most of this to avoid paying those ridiculous prices for food. You also get a press for any suits and you are able to check out at the exec lounge as opposed main reception. I don't think I will return anytime soon purely because of the price.

After reading several negative reviews of the Nairobi Intercontinental Hotel, I was prepared to be disappointed. After staying there, I don't know what all the complaints were about. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and well equipped. I was concerned about city noise, but it wasn't a problem at all. The restaurant had a very good menu of delicious food. And the concierge was superb, very helpful.

I was surprised at the security measures when we arrived. Guards at the gate looked under our taxi with mirrors. Our luggage was sent through scanning equipment and we walked through a metal detector. I wasn't expecting this, and even though there were no signs of trouble, I'm happy to see security measures like this at hotels frequented by westerners.

I would be happy to stay there again.

Why ever would a hotel with the reputation of the InterContinental rent out a room in which the bathroom sink drained so slowly the basin would fill to the brim in the time it took me to wash my face? (There wasn't a drain stopper either, but, heck, who needed one?) Oh, and there was no clock in the room. No alarm clock by the bed -- not even a time display on the tv (because it was one of those old tube televisions). Add that to the fact that they tried to charge me a second time for my prepaid room, and, well, this is one place I can't recommend to anyone but the desperate. That they put me next to the elevator and I had to listen to the thrum of the cables all night seems sorta par for the course. The only "plus"? A comfy pillow-top mattress.

Room Tip: If you get placed next to an elevator, go back to the desk and ask to be moved! (Maybe you should ru...
