“Nice athmosphere but not so efficient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

The hotel is a colonial style and offers nice athmosphere. I especially like the breakfast area which is quiet and the selections offered are more than enough. I would probably rate this higher for longer visits than for in-and-out trips as the efficiency in the reception is not the best and you do not want to spend more time than necessary in the reception when arriving in the middle of the night.

The surrounding area seem to offer some restaurants but the resturant at the hotel is good enough for a few days stay.

Room Tip: The hotel is built like a ring and i would recommend a room facing inwards to avoid disturbing noice...

It is a resort type hotel were the rooms are extended in some buildings.
The service and locations are good and the ambient is nice and relax....it is a nice place to stay if you had buy business day.
The food is great but a bit expensive.
If you like some souvenirs, there is a small local bazaar nearby.

Now to my personal issue. Despite all the nice and good reviews, I had a theft attempt inside the hotel. Where is booked a taxi from the reception at 4 am and when I was about to leave my room I find that someone was waiting outside the other side of my door, trying to hid himself so i decided to call the reception and they confirmed that they did not send anyone. by the time that the security came this person was already left....so nothing happened to me but at my claim i was not treated well, and even felt that there might be some conspiracy between the reception and the person who was waiting outside...my surprise is that I put a claim at holiday inn website and i had no call back, after one month i decided to call and holiday answer was that they carried the investigation with the hotel management...I never received a reply.

I will keep it as a coincidence or bad luck.

A nice hotel. Much better than some of the brand-name hotels in the center. Once inside, you don't know that you are in a major city. It is like a colonial estate with gardens.

Rooms are pretty standard fare, but the grounds are a oasis of tranquility. Staff is nce and friendly.

I always stay at Mayfair Southern Sun Nairobi due to its location and functionality . The Team recongises me and my requests of a room type are always catered to , unless the reservation is last minute and the hotel is full - which is understandable . The Coffee Shop has excellent breakfast and dinner buffets . The Gym is small but well equipped . Used the barber shop , expensive but good . Their steak house has young energetic staff with a good value for money menu . Have stayed in the family room with children and wife , large with two queen beds - spacious . When travelling alone I stay in the peaceful corner near the second swimming pool . TVs need an upgrade as they are slightly old fashioned . Mary in Reservations deserves credit and thanks to Mr Norman - the GM for ensuring I keep coming back !

Room Tip: when with family , ask for the " family room ".

We arrived late, but we're greeted warmly and showed to our room. There wasn't air con, but there was a good ceiling fan. The room had hardwood floors, a desk, coffee & tea fixings, biscuits for morning, and free bottled water. The second floor room meant we could open windows at night, but no screens and no mosquito nets, so we kept them shut. Excellent breakfast at outdoor poolside table. Left early, so didn't get any better look at the place, but it was pleasant and quiet and friendly, and clean. We found our bathroom plenty roomy, despite other reviews to the contrary. We were with a school-aged child and they brought an extra bed for him.

The hotel hosts the Spar Grill where you can eat the best pork in town! If you dine by the pool side there is plenty of great food to choose from but I loved the freshly made salmon. It is set in very beautiful gardens so the birds chirping makes it so natural.

This is a lovely old hotel, not terribly run down by Nairobi standards. There has been fairly recent renovation and upgrades to some parts. There are tall tall trees and mature plants in the courtyards of this hotel which are wonderful. You wake up to birdsong, go to sleep to frogs peeping and risk having your roll taken off your plate by a raptor at breakfast. Not bad for downtown westlands. Very safe and comfortable. We stayed here twice on our last trip to Kenya- once at night and once with day rooms. It is a cheap and cheerful Nairobi base so you can splurge elsewhere. Far from the airport is the main downside. There is construction next door which would not bother you at night, but during the day- when we had our dayrooms, it was really really annoying. A hotel should be mindful of noise since they advertise sleep. Breakfast is included and is very good. Restaurant by the pool has tasty Indian food, but be prepared to wait an hour for food. The Spur restaurant is awful. Salad bar is okay. I would definintely stay here again, but bring earplugs next time for day rooms.

Room Tip: Away from the pool area during construction. The "mischief pool" area may be quieter. Choo...
