“Lovely gardens and tranquility but noisy.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

This is a lovely old hotel, not terribly run down by Nairobi standards. There has been fairly recent renovation and upgrades to some parts. There are tall tall trees and mature plants in the courtyards of this hotel which are wonderful. You wake up to birdsong, go to sleep to frogs peeping and risk having your roll taken off your plate by a raptor at breakfast. Not bad for downtown westlands. Very safe and comfortable. We stayed here twice on our last trip to Kenya- once at night and once with day rooms. It is a cheap and cheerful Nairobi base so you can splurge elsewhere. Far from the airport is the main downside. There is construction next door which would not bother you at night, but during the day- when we had our dayrooms, it was really really annoying. A hotel should be mindful of noise since they advertise sleep. Breakfast is included and is very good. Restaurant by the pool has tasty Indian food, but be prepared to wait an hour for food. The Spur restaurant is awful. Salad bar is okay. I would definintely stay here again, but bring earplugs next time for day rooms.

Room Tip: Away from the pool area during construction. The "mischief pool" area may be quieter. Choo...

We stayed in this hotel in Nairobi in Feb'12 for 15 days. Being business travellers, u expect a comfort of home when you are away from home for more than 2 weeks but we were first put in such compact rooms where you would even struggle to stand without hitting yourself in the bathrooms...The air conditioners were very noisy and even the fan made a lost of noise.
The next day after requesting to the Guest Relations, we were finally put in rooms near the breakfast area facing pool side where the rooms were of a decent size and neat.

The atmosphere and the ambience of the hotel is great and the staff at the reception, Guest relations, at the breakfast lounge were always ever smiling, helpful and attentive. But yet we had a few issues:
One 2 nights, I was continuously troubled with loud noises outside my room in the lobby area where a group of friends staying in near by rooms were loud. I called up the Duty Manager to request those guests as we were getting disturbed and unable to sleep but the noises did not subside till almost an hour....guess even the Duty Manager wasn't bothered.
On the day of check out, I called up the reception and asked them to arrange a airport drop at 2pm, but to my shock at 2pm we were told that no cars were available; they made us wait for atleast 35 mins, making us discomfort at the thought of being late to catch our flight.

In short, they have the ability to do much more and then the stay would be excellent.

Room Tip: Rooms in the garden area facing pool side.

Very nice place, great breakfast buffet by the pool. Felt very safe there. Nice restaurant. The traffic to and from the airport was very bad, happy to get out of the town and to Amboseli park and start of 12 day Safari.

I stayed at southern sun last week. The ambience is good, very professional staff and food was tolerable. What was intolerable was the noisy environment - some party near the pool - couldn't sleep throughout the night due to that awful racket, surprisingly no air-conditioning in the room and whole load of free mosquitoes! The casino is good though.

This is a great hotel, with beautiful gardens, 2 swimming pools and nice parking. The hotel is very secure and the rooms are comfortably furnished. Being in Westlands, the hotel is a convenient location to access the C.B.D.

There are two restaurants; I particularly enjoyed grilled steak at the Spur Restaurant, which I alternated with meals at Zafferano Restaurant which is just about a minute walk from the hotel.

Overall, the service, meals, and facilities are great!

I spent a lot of time researching and selecting our hotel and was very pleased to find it ticked all the boxes and more!

We stayed over two periods in December totalling 12 nights. For the first part of our stay we acquired a room by the smaller swimming pool. Very quiet location and ideal for us as we just had to nip out of room to swim and laze around the pool. Second part of our stay we were upgraded to an executive room closer to main restaurant and larger pool. This location is less tranquil especially early morning with lots of guest and staff moving around but the room was of a higher standard.

If staying for several days opt for a room closer to smaller pool. For both locations the room facilities were excellent and our request for a fridge was dealt with promptly.

The staff were very accommodating, friendly and always smiling. Security was never an issue at the hotel as it is well protected. The gardens are lush and expansive. We had the pleasure of watching and listening to some exotic birds and much to our delight saw the odd monkey hanging from a tree.

Breakfast was very inviting and plenty of choice. Great pancakes! Buffet lunches and dinners were good value and excellent service and atmosphere.

Gym facilities quite compact however the ability to use the facilities at any time was great.

Location wise this hotel was only 10 to 15 minutes’ walk, in the day time, from various malls and restaurants. The hotel recommended drivers as well as other public drivers are courteous, great tour guides and keen for repeat business. Worth taking a drivers business card to arrange further trips.

Would have liked to have received free WiFi . Other than that no complaints. Would go back again!

Room Tip: Less noisy if you stay in a room closer to the smaller pool however noisy only early in the morning...
