Owner description: Kitengela Glass split into two separately owned glass companies 20 years ago. Anselm's glass blowing studio (with 25 years of expertise) in the planetarium dome makes blown & cast items, beads, lighting and architectural installations in an eco-friendly environment next to the Nairobi National Park. He also has a small cafe serving fresh sandwiches, coffee and juices. Alternatively Nani's company offers stained glass, rudimentary glass blowing, accommodation and animals. A visit to both companies is recommended, as they have very different ethos and products. Welcome!

“Seriously worth the trip..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2014

Not so far from the bustling Nairobi City scene, in Ongata Rongai, is where you´ll find this amazing adventurous space, filled to the brim with creativity, it has been, or atleast that is what i fealt, the playground for the owner, a Lady of German heritage, for more than30-40 years..

Go go go, you´ll love it :)

“Interesting Place to Visit, but you REALLY have to want to get there!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2014

This was a very interesting place to visit. The glassworks was fascinating to watch as the artisans crafted various pieces. The building itself is spectacular, and the grounds are fun, with all sorts of whimsical art pieces scattered about. The 'glasstronomique' coffee house was a relaxing spot to relax and sip a drink; the shakes were great! The shop has a nice variety of glasses, plates, bowls, etc., and the prices are less expensive, compared to the Kitengela Glass shops in the Nairobi malls. There is also a nice selection of inexpensive 'seconds'.

As others have mentioned, the location is remote and the roads are horrendous, so you REALLY have to want to come here. Nevertheless, the trip is worth it!

“surprising! (if only it had better access...)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2014

This is like traveling in time and space towards the Barcelone of the late XIX century -- a modernist island of glass and iron in the middle of nowhere. Very surprising, indeed.

If it were closer to Nairobi, I would recommend it blindly to anyone. But it is far and the last 7km, terrible (do not dare to go during the rainy season if you do not drive a 4by4). Thus, I keep my recommendation just to fans of Gaudi and alike.

“Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2014

I have been here twice in the past year and on both occassions I have loved it. The staff are very friendly and attentive and it is great to see how the glass is made. The little coffee shop on site is really sweet and the decoration of the place overall is beautiful. It is definitely worth a trip out there to see the hard work and love that goes into each individual piece.

“Very worth the effort to get there!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2014

I have been there a few times, and have always enjoyed my visit. As other reviewers say, you bump down bad roads (we actually got stuck in the mud) and then suddenly you are there. The kiln is awesome, and the glass blowers will demonstrate their craft if you are there are the right time. Wandering around the "factory" is like exploring a beautiful, funky, wild artistic vision. I know you can buy some of the same things in town at the malls, but it is so fun to see the artists themselves, some working, others who are there to sell. Buying something special at the source is so much more rewarding and meaningful. I believe that most of the glass art starts from recycled glass otherwise thrown away. If you can, tour the next door hotel - the view of the valley is wonderful, particularly from the infinity pool. One of the "bungalows" for guests is made from recycled bottles and is beautiful.
