“Fine food - colonial atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2015 NEW

*Set-up*
Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages is a combined indoor/outdoor restaurant in the posh Karen district of Nairobi. Our family of five ate lunch here following our visit to other attractions in the area - as were most of the other guests. Attached to this text you will find pictures of the menu (as of early Juli 2015), food and locale.

*Atmosphere*
The architecture struck one as being a mix of Sweden and Kenya, both in a good way. The African outdoor area was in excellent condition with a turtle, two well-kept house cats hanging out in the back and a couple of artists painting in the gardens. The buildings were of northern european design which gave a pleasant feel to the place. The restrooms were simple, but clean enough.

*Service*
We might be hitting some lucky streak with regards to Kenyan hospitality: the staff were both proficient speakers of english, polite and efficient. They made sure our children got served first and remained close by for the duration of our stay.

*Drinks*
We had juice for our meal - plainly served and nothing particular about it whatsoever.

*Starters"
While three children went straight for their main courses, we adults wanted starters as well. I enjoyed the Tamarind fish soup (520 KSH) which were both perfectly hot and tastefully balanced. The bowl and bread supplied were nothing special - either way.

*Main Courses*
The Children wanted something familiar for a change and decided on the Spaghetti Bolognese. I decided to follow suit and ordered the "Fully Loaded" burger (990 KSH). Except for the ridiculous price and uninspired tablewear I was very pleased. The chips were crisp and reasonably salted, the pepper sauce on the side worked out better than any ketchup ever could and the medium beef were both tasty, well tempered and seasoned expertly. The cheese, bacon and vegetables added excitement to the meal and complemented the superb meat and crisp buns.

*Overall*
As long as you remember that tripadvisor is not the Michelin Guide you will be very pleased with your visit to the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden.

*Pro tip*
We visited during the day and would advice others to do the same. The atmosphere is most likely greatly increased if you`re able to dine outside in the garden. Reduce your normal tipping somewhat since service fee (10 %) is included on the bill.

“Okay”

Just average in terms of the food. The setting and garden is beautiful. Nice for Sunday brunch or lunch. If you are out in the area then a good place to stop.

“Out of Africa and into history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2015

Karen Blixen led such an interesting life. And I love seeing where and how she lived. Out of Africa is one of my favorite books.
