Asian food is a) not really that common in Nairobi, and b) generally not that good. Zen Garden is potentially an exception. It's a bit of a drive out of the main business areas, but that's not necessarily a disadvantage. As the name implies it is a rather large restaurant in a garden setting, which is pleasant and roomy, other diners are not right at your elbows as in many other popular restaurants. I was with a large group of people which gave us the opportunity to share quite a variety of dishes. Having spent a couple of decades living in Southeast Asia, most of the Thai-style dishes were quite good without being exceptionally authentic. Tasty though, and the assortment of chili sauces served on the side made it easy to add spices to individual tastes. We also tried a selection of Dim Sum style dishes, including Har Gau and Shui Mai, and they were quite reasonable, obviously not as hot and steaming as the best restaurants in Hong Kong but OK just the same. We tried Pad Thai, and the Thai Green curry, and the sashimi plus a very tasty seared tuna plate. So. The bottom line on Zen Garden is that the food is a reasonably good attempt at standard Asian dishes, presented in a fashion that resembles that much over-used word 'fusion' (i.e. large plates, modest servings). It is also priced on the high side. So if you're looking for Asian food in Nairobi, go ahead and give it a shot, this is probably about as good as it gets. On the other hand, as it did in my case, it simply whets the appetite for real Asian food in Bangkok, Hong Kong or Shanghai.
