4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2014

khweza is a little bit out of town so location was average but it more than made up for this with fantastic service and beautiful rooftop eating area. The meals and drinks were really cheap and quite good especially the breakfasts which were included in the price. We hired one of their staff members, Fred, as a driver and guide and he was fantastic. He took us on a day trip around Nairobi and then on a 2 day trip to Hell's Gate National Park and Lake Naivashu finding accom and places of interest. He also drove us to airport $20AUS and to another hotel for the start of a tour for $7 AUS

To be Nairobi, you get much for the rate. The neighborhood is a dusty part of Nairobi, and I was surprised to see the relaxed and quality bed and breakfast. Room was average, but nice and clean and somewhat cozy. Stayed there for a month due to research, and breakfast was always good and served as requested. All services of the hotel worked well, as cleaning, washing clothes. Good prices at the restaurant upstairs which has a nice relaxed atmosphere and view over town, and good traditional food (didnt try so much the other). Hotel has a chilled atmosphere, and friendly staff that give you your space. If you need to live close to town for some reason, as me with research, then this is a reasonable offer. Neighborhood is close to town, and transport/ roads to town and westlands/ parklands are close by. Downside is that the shower tended to overflow the bathroom. I lived on the first floor. Quite a lot of traffic outside the window (busy part of town), so if you are very sensitive to sounds I don't recommend it. But for me the traffic was no problem at all, and compared to being just outside the window it was no problem at all. Slept good, but then again I also passed out after field research

Fantastic breakfasts on the roof top, lovely decor, great rooms. Only downside was when we came to pay and the receptionist said they use their own exchange rate, not the exchange rate on the day. We therefore ended up paying more than we expected to which we were disappointed with. Other than that, great stay.

If I rated Khweza on how wonderful the staff is alone, it would get 5++ stars!! (Really wonderful people who we felt we could trust here)

We booked a double room through a 3rd party site at a pretty good rate (more than $10 less than they were charging when I called over the phone) so I was happy with the value for the money.

Check in (and out) was smooth and easy.

When we got to our room, however, the bedside lamp was clearly broken and the toilet seat in the bathroom was completely broken off. Both things were fixed promptly when we brought it to the staff's attention but I can't quite get past the fact that they felt the room was suitable for new guests with those issues.

The bed was comfortable and the linens were clean. The bathroom shower proved a bit leaky (always water on the floor) and the hot water seemed to be a bit over-ambitious - the water got REALLY hot.

The food upstairs is very tasty and their complimentary breakfast was one of our favorite in Africa.

Aside form the few room issues, the other thing really working against Khweza is the neighborhood its in. As every cab driver we had told us, and as we learned the hard way, this area is not safe to walk around in AT ALL. Not even during the day.

It's too bad because location wise, you can walk to CBD in about 20 minutes (in theory). But in practice, it simply isn't safe to do so.

Overall, I would still recommend this hotel for a stay, but be aware it isn't perfect and, if you do stay here, just make sure you've always got a taxi waiting for you outside when you go places and that it drops you off right in front of the door when you get back.

On the way back from our safari our trip companions recommended this B&B as great value for a low price (in Nairobi terms, though). We spontaneously booked a night here instead of going to the hotel the safari company provided - and got better service for half the money we would have paid there.
The rooms are nothing big but nice and neat, and so is the whole B&B. No worries about the whole "Nairobbery"-stuff - you feel safer here than in an anonymous big hotel. And with hot showers and mosquito nets provided you find everything you need.
The staff was extremely friendly. When we couldn't have breakfast as our flight left so early they offered us dinner instead which we had at their cosy rooftop restaurant. Traditional food, simple and tasty.
We had a really good stay and hope that more travelers find their way to this friendly place!

My friend and I randomly got this recommended to us by another tourist we met on a local bus and we decided to take the chance and check it out since we had nowhere else to stay. Super friendly staff, nice rooms and rooftop (even though it doesnt look like much form the outside), free decent wifi and nice food! All in all it was a value for our money

With clean rooms, friendly staff and a good price, Khweza is a good choice for a shorter stay in Nairobi or for backpackers who want to meet up with new people on the rooftop terrace. Nothing sticks out as great, nor was anything bad but the advertised free wifi that (as anywhere else in Kenya it appears) has constant issues and only works in rooms close to reception. The rooftop restaurant serves some basic dishes, more of a back-up option, but the breakfast is really nice and it is a good place to take a cold tusker.

Not sure why some reviews says it is central; it is not. During daytime you can walk to the National museum (20 minutes) and take a bike to city centre (10-15 min by bike, hard to walk), during nighttime you have to take a taxi everywhere as even the hotel personnel advices that the street outside is not safe. Taxis from e.g. Karen will charge another few hundreds compared to actual city centre.

Room Tip: On third floor rooms towards the streets are nicest/newest but also most noisy, choose your preferen...
