To be brutally honest, I generally have low expectations for developing world hotels, even higher-end chains. The Crowne Plaza Nairobi is much better than expected and is probably one of the best places I've stayed in Africa.
LOCATION: In what is quickly becoming the new business district, it's close to the hospitals, new big business HQs and diplomats in the area. The neighbourhood is pretty much under construction, so the roads are not in the best shape. Not the hotel's fault and I actually never heard much in the way of noise in the morning or evening. And the roads aren't that much better elsewhere in the city, so I don't know why people are complaining about it.
ROOMS: Much better than expected. Nice comfortable bed, nicely decorated room. Other than some details, more or less on par with a European or North American room of the same standard. A few items, like my rain shower head that was bent and leaking keep it from being perfect. But overall, one of the best rooms I've stayed in in Sub-Saharan Africa.
FOOD: Better than expected. Breakfast is good with lots of options. There is usually a buffet for lunch and dinner which normally I would avoid, but it was pretty good. I had plenty of curry which was quite tasty. Buffet is a little pricey though. Room service was good too. Tusker Beer is pretty good.
STAFF: For the most part, pretty good. Always friendly. Had a few long lapses in response time for requests, but nothing ridiculous. Was asked once by a waiter that we had tipped the night before that if we are going to tip again, if we could give cash and not just use credit cards so he doesn't have to pay tax on the tip. That was odd and unexpected. Tipped him again, but no cash as we didn't have any on us. He was nice about it, was just surprised he asked us to do that.
OTHER: Pool looked nice, slightly smaller than I thought it would be. Fitness room is good, I used the treadmills a fair bit. Lobby bar is nice, don't know why one or two people said it wasn't any good. There is a coffee bar in the lobby with decent espresso (better than the breakfast coffee).
I would happily stay here again. Good rooms, friendly staff, tasty food. Also free wifi that was pretty good for Africa.
