“Stunning Boutique Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2010

Tribe is a trend-setter, boutique hotel, in the heart of Africa, Nairobi, Kenya.

Stunning architecture, chic interior and sexy bedrooms! Great roof top Moroccan themed shisha bar, stunning poolside restaurant, where you can dine in the pool, or at the raised table surrounded by flames!

I only experienced 1 minor glitch, a cut to the cold water supply during the early morning, which was promptly resolved.

Do you yourself a favour, when in Nairobi, stay at Tribe!

Overall I found the hotel a solid choice. As previous reviewers mentioned, it is connected to the village marketplace, great for shopping, food, and other amenities. It is also very close to various embassies and US missions, making it perfect for those in need of easy access to those locations..

The staff were friendly and service was fine and speedy - the hotel did not appear booked while I was there, probably making it easier to obtain service, especially at the restaurant.

The restaurant had excellent vegetarian options, and a great salad bar. This made the trip much more enjoyable since I had feared the normal 'junk salad' options that so many restaurants and hotels offer. The salad bar had 12-15 different options each day, and the variety changed from day to day, making it a great choice for vegetarians/vegans.

The rooms were a bit quirky, as other posters mentioned. It appears that they have now put doors on the bathrooms, allowing for more of a 'separation' between the two.

The workout room was well equipped with two treadmills, weight machines, and a stepper. Open all day, it was easy to make time for a workout when needed.

I found the bed comfortable. The pillows were a bit too big. The hotel staff didn't seem to have smaller ones available. One size fits all, it seems.

There are ample places in/around the hotel to meet with small groups, sit in chairs and read, and relax.

For our particular room rate ($200, government rate, king bed), they provided two or more bottles of water a day in the room. This is great to help recover from a long flight, and stay hydrated. There was also a small refrigerator in the room. No ironing board, but they seem to offer speedy pressing if needed.

The spa was decent - open and available for massage or other wellness treatments. Looks like they are still in the process of making it fully ready though. It need a bit more 'polishing' to make it feel the complete experience.

The internet service was good, allowed me to get to the necessary services I needed. My wireless phone service in the hotel was adequate and typical for Kenya.

My issues:
1. The shower floors were not slightly sloped toward the drain during tiling. This means you will be standing in a bit of water during your shower. Bring sandals.
2. I didn't have adequate hot water during my stay - best I could coax was lukewarm, no matter how long the shower was on. A co-worker had no problem (he was on a different floor), so it may have been my hot water feeder.
3. The A/C didn't work reliably during my stay. It wasn't the 'hot time' of year there, so the room didn't bake, but the A/C would reliably turn itself off after some arbitrary period of time, and especially when the hotel suffered blackouts (multiple times during the stay). When the room/hotel loses power, the A/C turns off, and you have to manually turn it on. So be prepared to get up and reset it throughout the night.
4. As other posters mentioned, there is no drawer space. Plan on living out of your suitcase for most of your clothes, unless they can hang up, or fit into the one small drawer in the 'closet' where the safe is. It seems that there was ample space to fit drawers under the TV. Must have been an oversight. If you're staying for any length of time, this is kind of annoying, but not a huge issue.
5. They are building more rooms in the hotel, so perhaps they will be addressing many of these issues in the new wings.

We have just come back from a trip to Niarobi Kenya, and I can highly reccomend this hotel for a few reasons, the rooms are excellent, clean comfortable and spacious, the service in this hotel is exceptional. Nothing is too much trouble for them. We also spent quiet a bit of time eating at the restuarant in the hotel, and the food was really good.

This hotel is incredible. The staff in the restaurant, at reception and in the business center were all absolutely wonderful. The security staff were very courteous and professional and made us feel safe. Food was great and the location is just a few feet away from an upscale and fun shopping mall called The Village Market. The hotel serves a Sunday brunch and barbecue with a live band playing softly beside the pool which was delightful. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Free high speed internet was a bonus. A great place to stay !

This is a very stylish hotel - and from the moment you walk in you can understand the architect's logic that he wanted to break out from the "Holiday Inn box style hotel". Rooms are very comfortable and memorable, staff are unfailingly helpful and service is generally outstanding. Its location is ideal for the UN agencies and embassies (in fact it's almost like little USA with so many Americans staying whilst working with the embassy), and being right next to Village Market is great too (shops, grocery store, movies, even bowling!). But this is definitely a hotel that caters to business people travelling on expenses - the rack rates are very pricey compared to similar standard hotels in Nairobi. My stay was also subject to a number of niggles - regular powercuts (I guess that is not the hotel's fault - and they do have a generator that kicks in, but it shuts down the A/C which doesn't automatically restart, which led to me waking up in hot sweats some nights!), and a problem with the water temperature which means that it takes a long time to warm up, but once it reaches boiling temperatures it stays there (which meant that showers turned into an elaborate affair of repeatedly shutting off the water and starting again, to go from cold to hot). There were also a lot of noisy parties at the pool areas. I was also disappointed that when I arrived at 0700 they didn't have a non-smoking room for me, despite having received my booking and payment for early check-in (which they acknowledged). I would stay here again if working in Gigiri - not sure I would come here for leisure though.

staying in this beautiful boutique hotel is nothing like staying anywhere else in busy Nairobi. I was been to Nairobi many times but my first time stay at this hotel truly left me with a lasting impression. Beutiful location very close to various forgien missions and UN office, sorrounded by lush trees and bang next to a village market that hosts one of the biggest craft fairs in nairobi every friday, having a super market and shopping experience nxt door makes it all the more convenient, the rooms are beautiful and modern and the chef will be happy to cook up anything you fancy if you missing a taste of home but what stuck with me was the genuine warmth and hospitalityof the staff. I experienced it first hand when I needed immediate care following early pregnancy complications during my stay. I felt as if I was being looked after my family , everything was seamless and they went beyong the call of duty to ensure my well being. I would highly recommend this hotel for a family holiday as well as business.

I stayed for six weeks July/August 2010 during my very first trip to Africa and Nairobi. I must say; I would love to return to the Tribe again someday. Never felt so good in my life, never slept so good and never felt more secure surrounded by an excellent Tribe staff. Everyone was so kind and most friendly. Apprieciated the gift upon leaving and really do hope to return again someday. Thank you so much, everyone at the Tribe for great customer service and the unique atmosphere. Note: Also enjoyed the evening walks to the Villiage Marketplace. Great places to eat and shop. Nice bookstore, movie theater and bowling alley. Plus Jim Cab taxi at the gate. Relax and enjoy, don't worry about so much about security, it's Africa and the people are wonderful. Take time to talk to everyone you meet and just be yourself. Thank you Tribe...I hope you read this. Kevin
