I've lived in Kenya for 6 years have been to various parts of Naivasha lake and surrounding game parks. I went with my fiance at the time this September to Crescent Island to take our engagement pictures. The photographer is our friend and a very talented man. We were excited because we went to Crescent Island for a walking safari when we first started dating and we wanted to go back there for our pictures. Coincidentally, it was also my birthday weekend so my fiance planned a romantic champagne picnic for us on the island after the photo shoot.
However, the date took a sharp turn. About 10 minutes into our photo shoot, a truck came racing directly towards us. Everyone jumped out of the way and we were just TERRIFIED. A british woman jumped out of the truck and we thought she had lost control of the truck. However, instead of apologizing, she came SCREAMING at us and yelled about how we were not allowed to be there and how we were not going to get away with it. After many minutes of screaming, cursing and threatening, we finally were able to explain to her we were just taking our engagement pictures. It turns out she thought we were doing some sort of commercial photoshoot. When she found out the truth, she briefly apologized, but went on to be extremely rude to the Kenya driver, boat driver and our photographers. I've not witness that kind of overt racism for a very long time.
After the photoshoot, just as we were about to sit down for our picnic, she asked one of her staff to come over to us so that she could talk to us through his walkie tallkie. She screamed at us again to leave and get off the island immediately. We asked if we could stay for our picnic, since we paid full park fees and had every right to be there. She screamed no and threatened to call security guards to force us out. So we packed up our picnic and ate the food else where.
Crescent Island is such a beautiful place with so much meaning to me and my now husband. Its unfortunate that our experience, and very possible the experiences of many others, are tainted by the rudeness and racism of this one british female reserve manager.
