Nefertiti was a queen above other queens and the Nefertiti Hotel is a hotel above other hotels. Do not miss it!
It is a perfect place to stay in Luxor. We stayed there a week in January, 2013. It will be our hotel of choice in Luxor on any future trips. We travel not so much for places as for the people we meet in those places. The Nefertiti Hotel scores on both counts. This is a great place with great people in a great location is the world’s greatest outdoor museum.
The entire hotel is lovely. The beautiful painted ceiling decorations in the public spaces are worth a photo essay on their own. The rooms and facilities are spotless, truly. Many have small balconies. Room 308 (and maybe the others on that side of the building) may be a bit noisy at times since they overlook a popular night spot. I’m an early sleeper so we asked to be moved. That happened with smiles and graciousness. (Ahmed or Muhammed at the desk can make recommendations about the rooms if you tell them your needs.) Rooms 401 and 402 are on the other side and quieter. 401 has two single beds and a small balcony; 402 has a double, but no balcony. They are also on the same floor as the roof deck. We liked that!
The food is scrumptious. We ate several meals there. You can eat on the roof deck or on tables in the lovely arcade that leads from the street past the hotel entrance to the souk. We liked sitting downstairs and watching the world go by for lunch. Breakfast and evening meals we liked on the roof deck to see the rising sun light up the west bank and then the sunset color the desert. As the sunset fades, Luxor Temple is illuminated and glows against the Nile and the desert. It is a stunning experience…and free from the roof of the Nefertiti!
Ahmed and Muhammed and the rest of the staff in the hotel and the restaurant are welcoming, helpful, friendly and totally charming. They have time for your questions and just to chat about Luxor, events in Egypt and life in general. They can arrange tours for you and will help in any way they can to make your stay perfect. Muhammed helped us re-do our flights from Cairo onward, something that could have been a real time-consuming hassle had we done it on our own.
The location is perfect: a 10-15 minute walk to the train station or Luxor Museum, right next to the Luxor Temple (see my review of that due by March 2013), adjacent to the souk, 10 minutes from the ferry across to the west bank. The included breakfasts are delicious, with omelets to order. The attached restaurant has wonderful food and you can order it up to the roof deck. And that roof deck! It has a perfect view of Luxor Temple and at night when the temple is floodlit (one of the few to be lit at night) the view is stunning. Beyond the temple is the Nile and across the Nile you can see Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple in the distance.
In 2011 we stayed on the west bank near a village to have ‘the village experience’. It was perfect. (See my review of Beit Sabee from 2011) This time we wanted to experience the city of Luxor. Nefertiti Hotel gave us that and much more…fine memories of truly friendly people in a perfect setting with perfect facilities. Give yourself a treat and stay with Ahmed and Mohammed…and do not miss that roof deck at sunset.
If you’re looking for other great places to stay elsewhere in Egypt , see my 2013 reviews of Beit el-Kerem Hotel (Aswan west bank, and already posted for 2013) and Dina’s Hostel (Cairo) my 2011 and 2013 reviews of the villa provided by ‘SomewhereDifferent’ in Siwa and my 2011 review of Beit Sabee (Luxor west bank). All the 2013 reviews should be in Trip Advisor by March 2013.
