I booked this hotel in April 2011 for a stay in September, through travel republic, whose website boasts 'Located in the city of Luxor, the TuTotel Luxor is nuzzled in a secluded area on the and#8220;Nile Cornicheand#8221; along the magnificent Nile River and only a few walking minutes from the spectacular Luxor Temple. In the hotel-s restaurant, Egyptian and International gastronomy can be explored. The hotel also boasts an all night long discotheque. The pool is located on the roof of the building where magnificent sunsets can be enjoyed. The Luxor Airport is about 8 km away.'
The same hotel with the same information is being offered today, but having been here for 4 nights I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
The pool is currently closed, as is the roof terrace, the restaurant doesn't exist, you have to walk to a restaurant on the corniche for your meals, which is a great restaurant with the best food in luxor, but as a woman alone, I wouldn't walk out at night and it's such a ridiculously short walk that a taxi is laughable. I asked for a taxi to go to mcdonalds, there is a published rate in the hotel lobby, they charged me twice as much!
The Luxor Temple is not 'a few mins walk', it's about 15 minutes walk away, in hot weather with every peddler in the city trying to sell you their wares along the way, and unfortunately there are a few who don't understand the word no, though I have learned that a mobile phone in one hand and a threat to call the police works well :)
There is no discoteque, though the signage on the front of the hotel boasts it too.
The hotel is on a busy main road, immediately opposite a primary school, children start school before 7.30am and if you are planning a lie-in, forget it, noise is at a high decibel volume from very early in the morning, and never stops, honking horns right into the night.
The hot water is turned off and you have to ask for it to be turned on every time you need a shower, and it took 36 hours for this request to be complied with when i first arrived. Prior to arriving at this hotel I had spent 2 weeks on the Nile cruising, but since being here, have several mosquito bites, having suffered none in the preceding two weeks, I showed them to the receptionist, 30 mins later the housekeeper turned up with a can of mosquito killer for me to spray the room.
NO one speaks any meaningful English and my little Arabic didn''t get me very far.
The housekeepers, both of them, sat outside my room waiting for me to vacate it so they could clean it daily, it was rather disconcerting. On the first day, after I returned from lunch they followed me back to my room to check if I was happy with it, and stood waiting for a tip!!!
The hotel is fairly cheap, though I selected it because of the description on travel republic's website particularly with regard to its location, rather than the cost, but it doesn't live up to a single claim, definitely one to chalk up to experience, and avoid like the plague.
