“Go for a Nile view room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2014

For a history fan, a visit to Luxor is a dream come true. Such is the majesty and immensity of the monumental structures left behind by ancient Egyptians that everything else becomes secondary. Well, the experience at Steigenberger was slightly unreal too, but only because this huge top end hotel was practically empty. Complete sections were closed and made it seem a little eerie in the evenings. Of course, that is a factor of Luxor being empty at the moment due to the perception of uncertainty hanging over the nation. Luxor seems especially badly affected, and all the hotels on the way seemed to have few guests.

The hotel is on the east bank of the Nile, along with many others, including the iconic Winter Palace. It is one of the most southern of hotels, though very much within walking distance of the city centre. There are many shops right outside. One block faces the Nile, and there can be few things more relaxing than a view of the slender felucca-dotted Nile in the backdrop of the Valley of the Kings from your balcony. Curl up with a book and your favourite tipple, and relaxation is guaranteed.

Check was fairly fast. The Nile view room itself was, well, standard. Comfy bed, proper desk, decent wardrobe, living room set of a round table and couple of chairs, with a plate of complimentary sweets, a balcony overlooking the Nile. Aircon worked well. The TV had some international channels. Lights were okay. Few plug points. No slippers. Washroom spacious, amenities just okay. One unusual touch – a shoe horn in a drawer! Room could probably do with a little brightening up though. Just one shocker – no water – or indeed tea/coffee maker, though available at a nominal charge. Water, at low rates, is available in the shops just outside the hotel’s entrance. The door keys seemed to cause quite a few people hassles.

Due to paucity of guests, some of the restaurants were closed – though an Italian (Casa Di Napoli), a Lebanese (El Tarboush) and a French restaurant (Café Des Délices) – all outdoor, were operational. There is also a Movenpick ice cream counter in this open courtyard. Food was decent, and a group of us ordered fairly diverse choices. The food is pricier than options outside. Breakfast buffets at Nubian were good too, fairly extensive, with multiple continental choices. The perpetual favourite however – fresh, crisp, falafel with thick, delectable hummus. Two added sidelights to breakfast – a delightful bunch of sparrows will politely hover around to share your meal, and appreciate any crumbs going their way. Also, it is by the river, so again, the Nile will mesmerize. Surely a bonus?

The hotel is pretty extensive, with many open public areas. There seemed to be a largish retail area within the hotel, though a significant part seemed closed. The reception has an ATM, though rates are better at local exchanges, we were reliably informed. Wifi is charged except for in the bar, but then you have to get something there!

There is a clover leaf shaped pool, with many loungers, all ready for you to put to good use. Yes, a nice pre-lunch swim, followed by a post lunch snooze. Just a few metres from the pool, down a little culvert, is the Nile. There is also a health club and spa.

Staff was okay, English wasn’t always a language all staff understood, but you can get by with smiles and gestures. Though not the hotel’s fault at all, the absence of more guests leant an air of desolation. Hope tourists return in bulk again soon to make hotels like these regain their usual vivacity.

We stayed in Steigenberger during the Easter break in April and I just cant understand the negative reviews some people have given it...
We had a Nile View room and the room was extremely spacious, the bathroom was also spacious, the quality of the toiletries was good. The breakfast had an extremely large selection of items.
Of the two restaurants, we tried only the Italian one. Found it to be very good, reasonably priced (of course not compared to Street food). The Cafe served very good sandwiches, the pool is nice and big.. There is a lovely view from the sun-loungers as the hotel is directly on the Nile. I must say that if the hotel were to be full there would be a shortage of loungers but as the occupancy was low we could pretty much choose our spot.
The front desk was amazingly friendly, Truly service with a smile, even offered us free late checkout.
The location of the hotel is spot on... Just opposite to the hotel is a bookstore, ask them I believe the name is Aboudy bookstore.. Excellent collection of books on Egypt. The general store opposite the hotel gives very good rates for currency conversion better than the bank...

We really had a relaxing time,.
All in all I would give the hotel 5 Stars.. the only fly in the ointment is that their free Wifi only in the breakfast area is limited to 64 Kbps..Extremely slow.. but atleast they had Free Wifi..

Do not think twice.. just book steigenberger...

Room Tip: Nile View Rooms only, quieter and spectacular view.. Sunset from balcony...

Thank you for posting such a lovely Review. We are aware of the limited speed of our free WiFi internet connection which can be frustrating at times for guests who perhaps enjoy a high speed fibre optic connection at home. We are looking at the various options which are about to come available within Egypt and will be offering a much faster connection just as soon as we can. We are pleased that you found your stay so relaxing. Here in Luxor there is so much to do and see and well as having the sunny climate for you to ‘chill out’ after a session of sightseeing. Many guests comment on the quality and range of food offered in our various outlets and we are pleased that you also enjoy the offerings. We much enjoy having you stay with us and hope that you will return in the not too distant future

Thank you for taking the time to post this lovely review. We are lucky to have such an amazing position on the bank of the Nile with far reaching views across to the hills on the West Bank. We take you point about a garden area for the children and although we do have limited space available this may be a possibility and we will look into it. We do hope that you will be able to return sometime in the future and it will be our pleasure to host you again.

I realise I went here last year but I always look at reviews on TripAdvisor to help me pick holiday locations. Me & my boyfriend stayed here the end of June to beginning of July last year & were slightly unfortunate to end our trip when the political trouble started, though the hotel was completely out of the troubled area.
The hotel staff completely blew me away, I have never had service like this before in my life. Everyone was so helpful, friendly & attentive. The hotel was very clean & sanitary.
The food was fantastic, we were B&B, the selection at breakfast you can't fault, there is a variety of food to suit everyone & you don't need to worry about fresh fruit etc as it is all washed with bottled water not tap. We also tried some of the in house restaurants, which were also amazing!
This hotel was fairly quiet but then again Luxor is not your typical all out entertainment/big hotel strip kinda place. The entertainment put on by the hotel is pretty much the same every night, but is nice to experience if you have never seen it before, plus the dancers got the guests involved wherever possible.

The pool area is spacious, clean & lovely. The music by the pool is not too loud like in other resorts which adds to the tranquility of it.

I would definitely stay here again if I returned to Luxor. Would recommend highly.

Although luxor is empty, or almost so, you could not wish for a better welcome upon entering this hotel.
Only 10 guests while I was there.
Service is always good and of course no rush to get a sun lounger around the fantastic pool...
Breakfast on the terrace with a Nile view and early evening drink watching the sunset. Nothing could be better..
At the salon, my new best friend
Doaa, gave me a fantastic pedicure and nail polish while we drank tea and chatted, so relaxing..
Mohamed, the doorman greets me like family.. I will be returning ASAP for another great visit.

Just returned from a truly wonderful stay at the Nile Palace. To summarise, it is a large stunning hotel in a beautiful setting on the Nile with an intimate and exclusive feel and extremely helpful staff.

Tourist numbers are sadly extremely low in Luxor at present due to the perceptions of security in Egypt but this created a tranquillity that made us feel like VIPs. We had a large and beautiful complex to share with what felt like a handful of other guests and staff tripping over themselves to help us. This is a large modern hotel with beautiful interiors and outdoor areas and is set right on the Nile. There are numerous communal areas ranging from a terrace overlooking the Nile, a European style courtyard with fountains, various bar and lounge spaces plus a lovely pool and barbecue area and also a felucca terrace. It was easy to spend a lot of time at the hotel because of the extent of the complex. The overall atmosphere here was of a calm and peaceful setting.

Numerous members of staff stood out, Mahmoud and Hassan at breakfast, Ibrahim at the pool and the boat staff, Arafat and Hassan made our trip even more memorable. It was the first holiday where we spent our last day going round reminiscing and saying our goodbyes to the staff (as did many other guests).

The location of the hotel is great as you are within walking distance of a range of restaurants and sights including Luxor Temple - although if you try to walk there you will get hassled by taxi/caleche drivers. A taxi anywhere in Luxor city is 20LE (GBP£1.80) at the most and a sure fire way to avoid any hassle is to take a taxi/caleche (the drivers are all very respectful of each other and will leave you alone once you agree to take someone's taxi/caleche). Being on the Nile you can take a felucca or a boat across to the East bank (Valley of Kings, Medinat Habu, etc) or just for a cruise directly from the boat staff that are linked with the hotel with the comfort of knowing that you are not dealing with cowboys. There are always plenty of taxis and caleches (horse and carriages) just outside the front of the hotel who will hassle you for a fare but if you ask the hotel concierge staff they will assist you through the 'gauntlet'. As tourist numbers are currently very low it is a fantastic time to visit Luxor, you have the privilege of walking through normally packed sights, temples and museums with only a few other people around. The down-side is that the vendors that rely on tourist visitors are extremely keen for your business. Having done a fair bit of travelling over the years, the hassle was not much worse than other parts of the world and it was always very polite and good-humoured with no aggression. Avoiding conversation and walking confidently past them is probably the best strategy. The ones to watch out for though are the caleche drivers - apparently a lot of these are unlicensed and their horses are not always very well looked after. In our experience, they were among the most persistent and regularly tailed us if we chose to walk down the street. There are however licensed caleche drivers (the license plate is visible on the back) and these do make for quaint trips around town.

When we stayed at the Nile Palace, some facilities were closed due to the low numbers of guests, the Thai restaurant, the buffet lunch/dinner and the outdoor barbecue were closed. This was a shame but the Italian and Lebanese restaurants that were open and the pool area snack bar were good. Highly recommend the chicken Steigenberger on the bar menu. The prices of the food are higher than in some of the local restaurants as you would expect but are still very cheap by Western standards. A main dish at either of the main restaurants was around 45LE (approx GBP£4) with a coke priced at 15LE (GBP£1.35). The fact that a few things were closed didn't matter very much to us as it was a small price to pay for the peace and quiet of not having to share the hotel with lots of other people. Having dinner by the candle-light and fountains of the courtyard restaurants and on several occasions being the only diners in the restaurant felt very exclusive and romantic. Often, we were the only ones in the pool and at the most there only ever about 4 or 5 other people in there at the same time. We also had the luxury of choosing whichever sun beds we wanted and then switching to different ones throughout the day if we wanted a change of scene. Towels were provided at the pool and new ones would be laid out for us if we returned to the pool area later in the day. Having said all of this, there were a few gripes from other guests about being charged to use the roof-top tennis court and not being allowed to use the snooker table (apparently there were 'mechanical' problems). There was also a spa on-site which had recently opened and a gym.

Staying at the Nile Palace in April 2014 could have felt like being in a ghost town but instead it felt very intimate and, as I've mentioned, very exclusive. Due to the numbers, we got to know most of the staff and also many of the other guests which was lovely - we would bump into them each day and exchange stories about where we had been and share tips and advice on sightseeing and excursions.

We were quite worried and a bit hesitant about travelling to Luxor but at no point during our stay did we feel under threat or unsafe. Speaking to the locals, Luxor has seen virtually none of the revolutionary troubles of Cairo and Alexandria. There are no guarantees about safety wherever you travel but we would not hesitate to go back to Luxor. Now is an excellent time to see all the wonderful sights of Luxor and experience the warm hospitality of the Steigenberger Nile Palace!

Room Tip: Nile view rooms are available at an extra charge but there are plenty of places to admire the view t...

This is the lovely hotel in the traditional style. The rooms were spacious and comfortable except for the usual brick type hotel pillows. The choice at breakfast was wonderful and the food in the in-house Italian Restaurant was very good but the house wine at 50 Egyptian pounds (£5) for a very small glass I felt was expensive and not particularly good. On the second night I drank water only.

The outside space was attractive and over looks the Nile, but bearing in mind the number of rooms I don't think there would enough room for people to enjoy the outside if the hotel had more guests. It was very quite while I was there. Hotel staff very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the patio area where the restaurants are might be noisy when the hotel is busy. N...

Thank you for taking time to place a lovely review here on Trip Advisor. Our guests are always very important to us and we do our best to make your stay with us a very enjoyable experience.
We are proud that we provide great service in our Italian Restaurant and in our other restaurants too and we have conveyed your comments to the staff.
We appreciate your comments regarding the ‘hardness’ of the pillows and we are very sorry you didn’t find them comfortable. We do have different types of the pillows to suit our client’s preferences and we encourage our guests approach us about any problems that they may have.
There are, from time to time, comments being made about prices charged for alcoholic drinks. In Egypt there are heavy taxes on all alcoholic beverages and these range from between 1200 to 3000% plus an additional Sales Tax of 30%. . Here within the Steigenberger Nile Palace we can assure you that prices for alcoholic drinks are both competitive and in line with other 5* hotels in the region. I hope this information is useful.
We do hope that we can welcome you again in our hotel in the near future and will do our very best to make your stay another memorable one.
