“Great hotel, wonderful atmosphere and superb breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2010

Out of the three hotels we stayed at in Egypt, this one was by far the best. The location is excellent with a pool and large seating area overlooking the Nile. The hotel is neat, modern, well maintained and has a very friendly atmosphere. The staff were excellent and always helpful.

For us the best part was the breakfast. There was a huge selection of buffet items from fruits and yoghurts to freshly prepared omlettes and waffles, all fresh and very tasty. This hotel is great for a romantic getaway.

The only downside was that we had a road-facing room on a low floor, so it was a bit noisy if you had the balcony window open. The A/C worked well though. It's worth paying extra for a nile-side room which is much quieter.

Overall, one of the best hotels We've ever stayed in. Thoroughly recommended!

My partner and I stayed at the Sonesta for 7 nights at the beginning of December, we booked a last minute deal through Thomas Cook so got very good rates. Prior to going my partner sent an email requesting the booking be changed for a double room instead of a twin (the only option TC gave us) but received no reply. On arrival we did indeed get booked into a twin room but on returning back down to reception the staff quickly and efficiently with no hassle moved us to a double room, we ended up with a room on the left hand side which over looked the "building site" below however being up on the 5th floor this didn't bother us too much and we still had a fab view looking across the Nile in one direction and Luxor the other way. As we had read the reviews on Trip advisor before going we were prepared to find some building work but if we hadn't be prepared for this then we would have been some what disappointed. Having said that I wouldn't say it spoiled our holiday in any way it was kind of interesting watching the builders work and if you went and sat down on the pontoon at the front of the hotel you would never know they were there.

The extension to the top of the building is nearly complete, my partner is an architect so curiosity got the better of him and we ended up going up in the lift to the new top floor which is amazing and not just for the views. The hotel is obviously planning on using it as a private suite/conference centre. If you go take a trip to the top, the workers/painters were more than happy to show us about!!

The staff through out the hotel were generally helpful and good natured, the room we had was on the old top floor and was spacious and well equipped - excepted for not having any tea/coffee making facilities. On arrival there were a couple of little things such as the TV reception being poor and the hose on the hair dryer was broken but these seemed to miraculously repair them selves with out having to mention them to anybody - maybe tipping the room attendant a few times helped!!

We were staying on a bed and breakfast basis but did eat in the hotel a few times other than Breakfast. The buffet breakfast was amazing just about any breakfast food you could wish for including Egyptian and Japanese. We also tried out the Aladdin restaurant on the first night which had good Egyptian food and a lovely setting, and the Italian on the last night which was also very nice and most accommodating allowing us to eat starters and main course before we went out to Karnak for the sound and light show and the returning afterwards for puddings!! The hotel food is more expensive than eating out but it is still cheap compared to the UK, the meal in the Italian cost about £35 for the two of us. Just watch out for the price of water in the hotel the same size 1.5l bottle cost us 13 E£ in the hotel and just 3E£ at the Arkwrights supermarket across the road.

The hotel has its own bank, we took only English money with us and just changed what we needed there, the rate was better than in the UK and they didn't charge any commission.

All in all it was a lovely hotel, friendly hotel staff, nice range of activities available, about a 15min walk from Luxor centre ( although that would depend on how much hassle you got on from the numerous taxi/ felucca captains /calache drivers!!) The building work is a shame but having walked around a large part of Luxor large building sites seem to be very common and I would say it ruined our holiday - if you want to avoid it then the only way would be to book a front nile view room, but they come at an extra price!

This hotel is beautifully decorated and appointed. The beds are extremely comfortable and the bathrooms are very hi-tech.. The service was good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food selection was very good and the quality was above average.
It has a great location in Luxor.

My prtner and I stayed in the Sonesta for one week at the beginning of December. I had sent an email to the hotel prior to arrival requesting one of the new rooms, but never received a reply.

We were allocated oom overlooking the building works, which we didn't want. We changed to the other side of the hotel overlooking the water/sewage works where a generator starts up loudly about every half hour 24/7. This meant we couldn't sit on our balcony, but the view was not very appealing either.

The room was OK, although somewhat 'tired' and the bed was comfortable. It was also clean and the bed linen changed daily.

The breakfast buffet was excellent, fantastic selection.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We ate in Aladdin and the Ita;lian restaurant and the food was good in both. Nobles bar is very nice, overlooking the Nile, but lacked atmosphere.

On the whole, the hotel is OK and was good value for what we paid, but it is more 3/4 star standard than 5. We have been to Luxor twice now and have enjoyed it, but having seen most of what we wanted to see, would not go back. However, we have enjoyed Egypt, so a trip to Cairo/Alexandria could be next.

We stayed at the Sonesta for 1 week on half-board basis and had a side Nile view room overlooking the water works which wasn't a problem. The room and bathroom were very well furnished ( but not 5 star in our opinion) and were cleaned twice a day by the room attendant. Food in the restaurant was excellent with plenty of choice and the staff wrere very friendly and helpful albeit a little too attentive at times. Only used Noble's bar twice and although the entertainer was bland he wasn't intrusive and the bar was beautifully furnished and relaxing. The pool area is one of the best features of this hotel wher you can sit and watch the cruise ships and fellucas sail by during the day. Overall I would rate the Sonesta as an excellent choice to stay in Luxor but we wll definately not be returning to this city due to the amount of hassle you get from the minute you step out of the hotel door.
From taxi drivers to kalesh (? ) drivers to boat owners you can't walk anywhere in peace to look around. You expect this in the Souk and don't mind the haggling etc but outside of there it really gets on your nerves and spoiled our holiday. If you like to wander around nice shops and sit at pavement cafes then Luxor is not the place to go. The historical sites and the museum, however, are beautiful.

We stayed there for 2 nights in Dec 2010. Very conveniently located on the main street in Luxor - Corniche el Nile. It looked like a lot of group tour stays are booked here, when we walked in the lobby was choked overflowing with people and same was the case whenever we walked around.

Nice hotel, clean rooms, got a neat Nile overlooking room, rooms albiet a little small.
We also dined at their restaurant - the Italian one - very rude waiter, the one who served us. Food was good though and not too expensive (100 EGP for 2 pastas for 2 people)

Breakfast spread was amazing, they had Japanese breakfast, egyptian breakfast, continental breakfast laid out separately. The breakfast floor has an view of the Nile spread in view of the floor by the poolside.

Recommended for people looking for a convenient, medium-luxury hotel on the main street in the middle of shopping, nile-side etc. - not for a ultra luxurious stay, surely not five-star.

We stayed at the Sonesta for 1 week 1-8 December 2010. Had a huge suite on the side of the fourth floor (Room 435) which had a lovely Nile view, (water works was below but that didn't bother us) the room went right through the hotel with a balcony on the main road.
The room was spotless with a lady cleaning it in the morning and a guy again at night.
Michel round the pool provides a great service along with the lady doing the drinks, she's very very good.

Thought the location of this hotel compared to others was excellent as you don't get the Cruise ships outside the hotel and if you can face the hassel its not far to walk into Luxor.

Breakfast was lovely and the food round the pool was good as well. As said on previous reviews the entertainer in Nobels bar is pretty awful but hey that's entertainment in Egypt for you.

We used the hotel taxi service which was excellent and got the same driver every time, he was very good. It may have been a little more expensive but you know the price before you go and I'm not one for haggling!

Did the hot air ballon ride with Hod Hod who were excellent.

The only thing we felt let this hotel down was that the steps to the lower decking were broken and had no handrail and they had covered them up with a large rug which was a trip hazard and not what expected of an hotel of this standard. But saying that if I went back to Luxor I would stay here again.

All in all a good holiday.
