“Oasis of Calm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

I have just enojyed my 17 th visit to Luxor and this is my third stay at the Sonesta. Over the years I have stayed in a few different hotels in Luxor but this is certainly top of my list. Some recent reviews I find amazing. The hotel lobby is not tired and the rooms are certainly of a very high standard. (I would love to stay in one of the rooms on the upper floors but I suspect I can't afford them).
Having been previously to the hotel with friends we sent an email requesting adjoining rooms on the side overlkooking the area owhich was once the local swimming pool. This is much quieter than the sde overlloking the electricity company. Even though we did not stay in frontfacing rooms we all had the most amazing views of the Nile and it was such a delight watching the sunset in the evenings. Far better than watching the telly. Not that we ever did.
I couldn't find fault with anything to do with my room. The standard lamp wasn't working and was sorted out almost as soon as I asked. The furnishings and bedding are immaculate and towel change tweice a day is amazing. The only small gripe that we all had is that none of the balcony nlights work which is a shame but not a major problem.
The breakfast buffet is really really good and the choice (considering the great lack of visitors during October is amazing. I'm willing to try anything and couldn't decide what one Egyptian dish was until we all realised it was like black peas. Loved loved loved the breakfasts and the staff were very attentive.
We dined twice in the Serapsis restaurant and once in the Japanese restaurant and again we couldn't fault the food or the service.
The pontoon in the pool area was in the process of being recovered whilst we were there but again because of the number of guests there were still plenty of sunbeds there and each morning the towel man laid out 4 beds for us as soon as he saw us at breakfast. The lovely Nagha still works there. She is an absolute delight and a real asset to the hotel but then again so are all the staff.
I have read earlier reviews about the staff on reception being unfriendly. I never found this and they couldn't have been more helpful or polite.
I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend this hotel. IT is definitely a comfortable haven and a welcome site to return to after a hectic days (or in our case weekends) visit to the major sites.
You will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Email before you travel. Ask for a room on as high a floor as possible on the Steigenberger Nile Pa...

Excellent hotel, amazing friendly staff, very high standards and excellent food choices. Breakfast is busy so often a wait for a table.Decor in some rooms is a bit tired, half face the back of hotel where you may get some noise from staff & deliveries or air con unit the other half face the street where the call to prayer from surrounding mosques is deafening but you cannot escape it anywhere in the city. Good choice of eating places and variety of food within hotel and in nearby hotels. Major let down is the constant chain smoking filling the lobby and cafe area making it very unpleasant to walk through going in and out of the hotel and in all the restaurants. Having an allergy to smoke gave me a very bad chest infection whilst there, even around the pool you cannot escape it.. Sunbathing on the terrace is often overlooked by security from outside and can result in being stared at & watched in your bathers is not pleasant. Pool is good and lots of spa baths around for a warmer dip. Good hairdressers great price.

Room Tip: Ask for room not facing mosques if you want any sleep facing Nile, higher floors less noise from AC...

We had a really relaxing week in this wonderful hotel. The air conditioning was a treat as the weather in October was very hot.Our room on the fifth floor was clean and serviced to a very high standard. Staff very welcoming and extremely helpful at all times. Staying on a half board basis we found the buffet style restaurant had plenty to choose from with mouthwatering dishes presented in a very attractive fashion. There are other restaurants in the hotel if you would like to try Japaneese or Italian dishes which you have to pay a small additional charge but speaking to other guests that tried the Japaneese restaurant they said that it was well worth the extra. Even the laundry service was exceptional. All in all a very good experience

The St George is a fantastic hotel, and I would recommend it to anyone. It is a palace of calm when you step off the hectic streets of Luxor. The staff are brilliant and very helpful. The view from the room looked out over the Nile and towards the mountains of the West Bank. The catering was of the best quality at all times.

Room Tip: Ask for a Nile view!

I stayed for the weekend with my family and we loved this hotel. The staff were so helpful and friendly and the rooms were great. I had a suite with my husband and 2 kids and my mother had a regular double room. We were all on the third floor and the Nile Views were fantastic. We had dinner one night in the hotel restaurant which was actually very good (im not usually into hotel buffets) and the second night we walked less than 5 mins to the street behind the hotel which is full of different restaurants and bars. The pool was super clean and the pool bar menu is perfect for lunch. Overall I would recommend this hotel for families and couples for a relaxing stay and the perfect base for all of the incredible sightseeing available in Luxor.

This is a really good hotel; we could not fault it in any way.our room was very clean, Staff were very helpful and friendly, Food is very nice too. swimming pool is kept clean. It is very close to all local restaurants, shops etc... in fact all sops are hardly closed as they are all up to very late hour if not to the next morning.
Strolling on the river Nile bank was the ultimate as this hotel is right there! :)

Room Tip: Amazing place.

This hotel offers excellent value for money if you book a partial Nile River view room. My room on the 9th floor looked out over the river (almost directly) and I could see the Valley of the Kings lighted at night. In the day there were hot air ballons floating almost into my window over the river and in the afternoon the Feluccas were mesmerizing and heavenly to watch sail by from the room's balcony. The hotel has fantastic breakfast buffets, don't book a stay without booking the breakfast buffet. Dinner buffets are to be avoided. The Italian restaurant is not very good especially for an Italian. Japanese restaurant is famous but I didn't eat there, who wants to eat Japanese food in Egypt except probably the many Japanese who stay at the hotel. There are many restaurants on the street outside or nearby the hotel for dinner or only a short taxi ride away. The rooms and baths are very large, mattresses less than satisfactory (ask for a bedboard). Hotel is swathed in marble! Pool is circular and difficult to swim laps in. Pool area is not well maintained. Hotel has a dock from which you can board a felucca provided by the hotel for a fee. The view of the Nile at sunset from pool area is heavenly. Hotel staff very friendly and professional. The hotel shares the same river frontage as the Iberotel and new Four Seasons hotel as well as the Club Med site. Their Business Center has brand new air-conditioned chauffered cars for rent at very low prices for private day excursions to Edfu, Dendara and Abydos and Kom Obo and Aswan. The trip one way by private car to Aswan was less tha 200 Ep. The all day private car excusrion to Dendara and Abydos about 160 Ep. The driver /drivers (2 for Dendara/Abydos) made me feel like a prince. They waited for me as long I needed to visit the sites. I rented a bicycle at the other side of the ferry landing to visit the West bank sites on two separate days, avoiding all the tourists and having most of the sites (Tombs of the Nobles, Ramesseum etc.) to myself except for the valley of the Kings. One of the best hotels in Luxor (along with Hilton (much more expensive, & far away), Four Seasons(extremely expensive), Iberotel (lesser quality but better pool))

Room Tip: Visit the Business Center for private chauffered car excursions at VERY LOW COST. These private car...
