Desert Paradise Lodge is a very special place with very special hosts. We arrived hot and bothered in the July heat and Fareda (Swiss), Ashraf (Eygptian), and the team ensured we left relaxed, and happy, promising we would return.
Its location is in a small village on the West Bank. It is just a short and cheap taxi ride from the Lodge to the main sites on the West Bank and they will arrange efficient and firendly taxi rides for you with local drivers who appreciate your custom. It is perfectly located for taking in one or two key sites and then returning to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon before temple fatigue sets in. Not once did we feel that we were missing out by not being in Luxor itself.
Whilst set well away from the town of Luxor this lodge offers something else special. With the exception of visiting the historic sites we never left the lodge. The food is simple but delicious Egyptian cooking that your stomach can trust. The rooms are super clean, well appointed with Egyptian textiles and decor, spacious. We stayed in the suites which were very comfortable and came with much appreciated air con. The beds are very very comfortable. The Lodge is built in a traditinal Egyptian style and offers good views over the Theban Hills.
The recently added pool is a lovely addition and we spent every afternoon cooling off from the Luxor summer heat. It is clean and just the right temperature.
But the jewel in the crown of this Lodge is the friendliness of the hosts, Fareda and Ashraf. Never before have I left a hotel feeling that I have left with two wonderful friends. Fardeda has a wonderful philosphy to ensuring here guests have a wonderful stay. Don't expect to arrive with a fully planned that you can stick to. This is a place where you let each day take it's shape as you discuss what you'd like to do over breakfast with Fareda. This place combines a 'Carpe Diem' philosphy with a 'Laissez Faire' attitude and this makes for a most fulfilling but relaxing stay. This is poles apart from the identikit corporate hotel and miles better for it. It wears its very endearing personality on its sleeve.
Fareda and Ashraf will arrange anything you need using their local contacts from a boat up the nile to Karnak to a massage in the Lodge itself. And as hosts they enjoy meeting and spending time with their guests and went out of their way to ensure we had a wonderful stay. If your idea of travel involves meeting local people and feeling as though you are not just guests but new friends that have just not yet been made then this is the place for you.
Definitely the best place I have ever had the privilege to stay and I hope I will return. If this review seems too good to be true don't be suspicious. It is simply the best way I can think of to say thank you for a most wonderful stay.
