“Excellent short break!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

Stayed there for a couple of days in January's... wish it could have been longer!
Nice clean rooms, very courteous staff and a superb breakfast!
All in all, an excellent experience which we hope to repeat soon.

Amazing location in the middle of Nile River where you can enjoy fantastic seen of Nile River. In is exactly located front of Sofitel Cataract. Rooms are nice especially high floors. Breakfast was fantastic too where you can enjoy variety of Egyptian food. There is a small boot from the hotel to the other bank of Nile River. It is going to/from hotel and other bank every 10 to 15 minutes the whole day and night. Also, there is a Nubian Restaurant called Dokka on other Island near to Hotel where you can enjoy testy Egyptian food. There is a 50 meters hight restaurant on other island where you can enjoy food and see the whole Aswan city down. I went with my family and we were very sad in the departure day that we are going to leave such beautiful seen and weather. We are going back next year God Willing.

The hotel has a lovely situation but the hotel needs refurbishing. I was in a party of 24 and all but 2 went down with food poisoning that was thought to originate from this hotel. We were also told by our rep that most other guests of the hotel had suffered the same fate. One of our party was hospitalised for 2 days because of it.

We were one of few people to visit Egypt and were pestered to death. The whole country was messy it was a bit like going to a landfill site.

Room Tip: Don't go to Egypt. The country wants tourists but if you go you are bombarded with sellers at ev...

The first time we stayed here was in January 2011, when we had planned to stay for a month but were sent home early because of the Revolution. We decided to try again and, this time, went for two weeks over Christmas and New Year.

ROOM:
We had booked a room on the West side, to get the afternoon sun but when we arrived, very late, we were given a room on the East side. However, next morning we spoke to Reception and they immediately changed us to a room on the other side of the hotel without any problems. All the staff were very friendly, kind and helpful throughout our stay. Most of them spoke very good English and many of them took pleasure in making little jokes with us.

On our previous visit we stayed in one of the garden chalet rooms but, because of low numbers of visitors, these are currently closed. However, our room in the main hotel building was fine, with plenty of room and everything we needed, including tea and coffee-making facilities and a fridge. My one real criticism would be that the beds were too hard, but we did get used to them. We had a furnished balcony, with beautiful views over the mountains and the wetlands, where many species of birds live.

The hotel is set on a 32 acre island and the grounds are beautifully maintained by a team of gardners. Flowers are everywhere, as well as orange and lemon trees. There is also an organic farm, where many of the vegetables for the hotel are grown. It was our daily pleasure to walk around the hotel grounds, enjoying the views, admiring the flowers and bird-spotting!

Access to and from the hotel is by a dedicated ferry boat, which runs 24 hours a day, usually every fifteen minutes to half an hour, so it was very easy to leave the island when we fancied a walk into town. However, it is also very easy to become lazy when surrounded by such beauty and we often found it more attractive to walk the grounds or sit on one of the many terraces reading and relaxing.

There are two large swimming pools but I was reliably informed that, on this visit, neither of them was heated, so we never felt the need to try them out.

FOOD:
We were on all-inclusive tarif, so we had buffet meals in the restaurant. Breakfast had everything you could want (except, of course, bacon) and I defy anybody to say they couldn't find something to eat. There was a full range of cooked items, including an egg station where a Chef cooked eggs to your specification, as well as pancakes and waffles. Cold food included cereals, fresh fruit salad, yoghurts, salads, meats and cheeses. There were many different types of bread and rolls, plus a wide variety of pastries and croissants.

Lunch, on the first couple of days we were there, consisted of a set three course meal, but thereafter, it was a buffet. This always consisted of a choice of soups, hot beef, chicken and fish dishes, pasta and salads, plus a large choice of puddings and fruit. You could also get a light meal in the cafe/bar.

One day we went to the Italian restaurant by the pool, for a change and had a very good pizza. Unfortunately this restaurant was only open at lunchtime, because of lack of guests in the hotel.

Afternoon tea and cake was provided for all guests at 4.00 p.m, which was a nice touch, and especially enjoyable if you took it onto the Sunset Terrace to see the sun going down.

The Dinner buffet was very similar to lunch, but usually with a wider choice.

On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, the hotel put on a Gala Dinner and entertainment. Both evenings followed a similar format - drinks reception in the lobby, followed by a gourmet dinner (5 course at Christmas and 7 at New Year) in the restaurant. The meal was followed by live entertainment - local musicians, belly dancer, Nubian folkloric show and audience participation was encouraged.

Entertainment on other evenings was less than exciting - consisting mainly of some local musicians who played in the bar.

EXCURSIONS:
We wanted to visit Abu Simbel by road, so spoke to Yasser in the lobby. He arranged for us to have a private air-conditioned vehicle (although it wasn't hot enough to use this and we just had the windows open) and a local guide for a very reasonable price. It was a three hour journey each way, with about two hours at Abu Simbel, but well worth it.

On a couple of occasions we hired a motor boat from one of the boatmen at the hotel. This was a lot easier than walking along the Corniche and being pestered by everybody! Feluccas are also available. Prices negotiable!

VALUE FOR MONEY - Excellent.
We booked an all-inclusive package which, for drinks, was from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. However, when we arrived at 1.30 a.m., rather thirsty, we had a couple of beers from the bar and these were not added to our bill. We had some underwear and a lot of my husband's shirts laundered and it was very cheap.

SUMMING UP:
Overall, the hotel is showing some cutbacks, due to the fall in number of guests. Some services were not available, such as alternative venues for meals, and a lot of rooms are empty. We went over what would normally be a very busy period and, although there were quite a lot of people there, it was much quieter than you would expect.

However, we love this hotel because of its peaceful and beautiful environment. It is ideal for a relaxing holiday, especially in the winter when the weather is perfect for Europeans. We hope to be able to go back again next winter.

Room Tip: If you go in the winter, ask for a room on the West side, so you can get some afternoon sun to help...

i was initially meant to be staying at this hotel with a friend, who at last minute cancelled for various reasons. i was not willing really come to aswan alone as i am not a fan of quiet places. however, despite my own company for most of the the trip, i was made to feel at ease and comfortable from the hotel staff. i also managed to meet a fellow english lady who was a delight to chat with . we also shared with travel/tourist trips to various ancient tombs and locations. this was a real tonic for me to share my experiences with another person. it's not much seeing such great monuments alone !! nevertheless, i was quite pleased with the reception staff at the hotel for their politeness and ability to have experience of how to help me with various things. i was most distressed with Egyptair , who having travelled with for the 1st time, let me down!! the flight was delayed both ways and no apology with little word of why. inaddition, the airline also lost my suitcase upon arrriving in aswan airport at 2am!! they were not very helpful. i also had to collect my bag the next day rather than it being delivered to the hotel. that was very bad service and i had to pay the taxi again x 2 to go there and back !! the hotel was nice, it was clean, pleasant and tidy. the food , however was not that great, esp the penne arabita!!! it was came back cold 2 times and it wasnt even nice. the rooms were ok, if a bit cold even with the heating on ( too loud ) . no mini bar!! the staff were all lovely but they should be quicker with my tourist requests when ordering food/drinks and service. the hotel was more or less empty. no excuse!!

Hotels throughout Egypt are severely underbooked since the Revolution, so they're making up the difference by a combination of cutting back on renovations, lowering rates as incentive, and reducing or charging more for certain services. Pyramisa is no different: they've closed the chalets, though sites like hotels.com haven't removed these as an option. We booked a chalet but were put in a Nile view terrace room instead (which was mostly a view of the trees in front of the hotel). The manager said it was just as nice, but it wasn't that nice, and it was quite a hike to the gardens and pools. We'd also asked for a double, but our room had two single beds, so they pushed them together and declared it a double room!
They're making an effort to keep the place up, but walking through the gardens, you definitely get a ghost town vibe. Birds hop around in the lobby and nest in the deserted wings. There's free wifi in the lobby, but it was really spotty. The pools are still nice to lounge by, though.
We didn't eat there because we'd heard the food was really bad (and they've also closed most of the restaurants on the grounds). Take the boat to town and eat at Panorama (see my review), just a few meters to the left for better and cheaper. We didn't do the breakfast buffet because the one night we stayed, we got up at 3am to go to Abu Simbel. They were right on point with the wake-up call and the breakfast box, though. They also let us do a late check-out at no extra charge.
This was the most expensive hotel we booked on the trip, but I didn't feel this hotel was quite worth what we paid for it. Maybe it'll get better when business picks up again.

Room Tip: They've closed down quite a few wings due to low occupancy, so check directly with the hotel to...
