I traveled solo to Aswan Egypt. Was I afraid ? absolutly not. Aswan was as quite as it always is, (no sign of anything unsettling) and the egyptians were as friendly and welcoming as ever. I indulged in my favorite activity, sailing on the Nile in a felucca. I chose Aswan for the Nile is definitely the most beautiful there, nothing better to sooth and relax your mind. I always (this is my fifth trip) contact the same captain who has always proven to be most helpful, and honest, all with a great big smile and who knows every inch of the river (captain Toma on the felucca Luna at the foot of the Mövenpick hotel or 01223785651). I have seen areas which have probably not changed since the time of the pharaons.
What to see and do in Aswan ? Philae temple, the Nobles tombs (6th and 12th dynasties) unfinished obelisk, nubian museum, saint Simeon monastery (7th century) archeological area at the south end of Elephantine island, tea lunch or drink on the terrace Of the Old cataract hotel (very Agatha Christie) particularly stunning at sunset. Aswan is also just a two hour drive to the great temple of Abu Simbel. Definitely 5 stars
