I have been working down in Qena for a few weeks but I have spent the past two weeks in the Zamalek district of Cairo. I have not done much exploring due to work commitments but I have been around parts of the Zamalek district.
I visited the Five Bells restaurant last week. The setting is very impressive and unusual but that's as far as it goes in my opinion. The sight of cats wandering about does not inspire confidence in hygiene standards. I found the food to be average at best though the waiters were friendly and reasonably responsive.
This, unfortunately, is not common here. I have been to several cafes and coffee shops where I found the service and attitude to be generally appalling. On two occasions I departed cafes having waited for 20 minutes when the staff were obviously not busy. I will not disclose the hotel where I'm currently staying but I will never return there - to describe the staff as indifferent is being kind to them.
All types of people in the service industry here tell me how worried they are about the drop in tourism. A word of advice to those people - add two + two and the answer will be clear.
