“Charming oasis in downtown Cairo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2010

Lots of things worked about this hotel - located in the middle of downtown so easy to walk to local shops, metro, and bazaar. Never felt unsafe in the area, morning or night. Rooms were bright, airy, and clean for being based in the chaotic downtown. Our room had a small balcony, which was lovely for people watching on the bustling streets. Other nice pluses were: breakfast included, free internet, saloon for chilling out, and very helpful staff. One tip: don't be discouraged by the lobby. You can tell the building was once grand, but its better days are behind it. This doesn't reflect in the actual Talisman hotel on the 5th floor. Don't let first appearances fool you. Overall, excellent value for the money, and would definitely stay here upon another trip to Cairo.

Talisman is a nice comfortable boutique hotel, but a touch on the expensive side. We stayed there for 2 nights and the rooms are clean, spacious and well appointed. The hotel also has a certain charm about it and is well decorated. No complaints at all about the room or the service, but one thing to bear in mind is that the place is a little hard to find, even though the location in downtown cairo is excellent and just a few mins walk from the National Museum.

Ask the cab to take you to Talaat Harb street, between American coffee and Metro Cinema/Excelsior, also dont be put off by the entrance to the building or the deserted first few floors.

So all in all a pleasant experience etc, would recommend the place if you are not bothered by the price tag.

We spent 2 nights in this charming hotel, located in the heart of Cairo and in walking distance of the the Egyptian museum. The hotel is located on the 5th floor of a building that harbors other businisses (and a very funny, old fashioned elevator). The building is entered not from the main street where the cab will drop you off (Talaat Harb) but from a side street closed to traffic, that is bustling with stores and people (a bit crowded and for my taste, but always lively and well lit).

The first night we got assigned a room that is just next to the reception, and we didn't sleep well because guests were passing by, talking, phone was ringing etc. We were however immediately moved to another room after complaining, and the staff and the owner were extremely accommodating in general.

The hotel has a lovely dining room and excellent breakfast, and also a nicely decorated salon where you can chill and drink mint tea in leisure time.

The room decor is wonderful and a breath of fresh air compared to the generic chain hotels. All is all I highly recommend it!

If you are looking for a place with character, within walking distance to many sights (Egyptian museum - about 15mins, Khan al Khalili - a longer trek, but doable - 30 mins) then this is a god choice. Its located on a busy street, but the rooms are quiet. Some look onto a inner courtyard and other face the streets or alleys (those may be noisier !)

It is hard to find at first since the entrance is on a side alley, and there is no signage! The staff provided me with clear detailed information so my taxi eventually found the place. Look for the Addidas store!

My room had a comfortable double bed, big marble bathroom and was spotless. There is free internet in the rooms and a computer for guests to use with Web access. Only down side : there was no hot water in the morning the 3 days I stayed there. The staff apologized profusely but you might want to enquire about this before booking.

Nonetheless, I would stay there again.

Don't be deceived by the entry to this hotel. Characteristic of Cairo, a dodgy lift disguises a beautiful and authentically decorated interior. Clean rooms provide a calm respite from the hustle and bustle of Cairo. Staff provided helpful advice, assisted in getting cabs and carrying luggage. Free Internet was handy. We stayed for two nights in a double room and found the location to be convenient.

The hotel entrance is impossible to find especially if you arrive at night. You enter a super old elevator and go up 4 dark floors and then suddenly...surprise!! The magnificent face of the Talisman hotel appears! Fantastic hotel with moroccan influences, great if you enjoy diving into new cultures:)

Convenient location in downtown Cairo. The entry through a shabby office building lobby was difficult to find and off-putting, but that feeling disappeared as soon as we reached the hotel itself, on the fifth floor. The rooms were charming, with high ceilings, classic details, nicely decorated. Staff was helpful, especially in arranging a guide and driver. If you're looking for a typical modern hotel, try someplace else, but if you enjoy something a bit out of the ordinary, this is the place.
