I saw the Giza pyramids several years ago and was looking forward to seeing them again. They are still absolutely beautiful and breath taking but the overall experience has been completely ruined. Unless you are with a guide or on a tour, expect to be hassled and harassed.
We were trying to catch a taxi to get to the pyramids from the train station. Two people came up to us and offered a taxi ride. When we agreed on the price and started walking towards their car, they mentioned we could either take the really expensive tourist option or the cheap local option. The local option sounded like a scam, so we said the tourist option. They then turned around and left. Didn't say anything but completely disappear. Really rude but almost funny.
When we finally did get a taxi, we were about 200 metres from the main entrance when a group of teenage boys jumped in front on the car. The taxi diver tried not to stop but was forced to. They surrounded our car and tried to get in. We instantly locked our doors but they got in the front. We yelled at them 'no thank you' several times in Arabic. They weren't listening. We physically tried to get them out of our car and couldn't. In desperation, we yelled 'emshi' (go away) to which they told us off for saying that and said they worked there. We kept yelling and the driver had to physically push them out and drive off quickly.
When we asked the diver what was going on, he said they were crazy and they were trying to get us to go on a horse/camel tour.
When we got to the gate, there were a group of Police sitting around. We told them what had happened and they smiled and stated 'that always happens since the revolution'. They did nothing.
At some point, Egyptians need to stop blaming the revolution for the rude and aggressive behaviour exhibited by some of their community members. At some point, they need to take accountability for their own actions.
Nothing can take away the beauty of the pyramids but this experience, combined with the continuous hassle we had while walking around, certainly makes the experience less than enjoyable.
