So many things wrong with this abode that it is difficult to know what to complain about.
It would be easier to say what was right, as this would be one comment only.
“It was a place to sleep.”
The entire hotel is filthy, from the reception area to the individual rooms and bathrooms.
It was clear from the filth that covered the windows of the reception area and the dirt that lay upon the computer monitor itself that the rooms were not going to be up to much, and indeed there were not.
The blankets on the beds were filthy, stained and covered by blood stained sheets from previous occupants, which although had been washed retained the evidence of insect bites. “Housekeeping” had made beds in reverse with sheets on top to try and conceal the dirty blankets. Before I laid down on my sunken mattress, I found a large bedbug on my pillow, which was full of blood when squeezed. In the morning my back and arms were covered in bites, which prompted a visit to the local pharmacy for treatment. The bathroom door had never been cleaned and contained marks from various customers dating back 20 years. Mould was growing out of the grouting between the bathroom tiles on the walls and floor. The toilet pan was the most disgusting I had ever seen and the shower curtain remained held together by 20 years of dirt.
In most hotels, you might find one or two things to complain about and normally I would phone reception and ask for these things to be put right, however looking around the room I decided that this would be a futile effort as nothing could be described as barely acceptable. Based on this, we immediately decided to look for another hotel but did not want to make the same mistake a second time. We investigated the nearby hotels, “Zoser”, “Horizon” and “Barceló - three pyramids”, all listed as 4* hotels to make sure that unlike the “Europa” they were truly 4*. We eventually booked into “Barceló”, after staying at the “Europa” for 3 nights out of 12 booked and paid for in advance.
I should also mention the use of the basement level, which although signed as BAR should also have a red light placed above the staircase to indicate its correct usage.
My final warning would be to stay away from the travel desk, as the large man behind it will try and charge you inflated prices for local trips and sightseeing. Do not use any of these people, no matter what hotel you stay at, but instead look for a white metered taxi for all your destinations.
