A couple of weeks ago I spent five nights at the Longchamps, together with a friend. We both had a wonderful time there and were completely satisfied. After strolling around all days long in this cacophonic, chaotic city, it was always a good feeling to return to this oasis in the middle of Cairo. Our room with two beds was spotless clean and spacy. The bathroom was shining white and clean, too. Of course, it is always possible to go to one of the chain hotels, for a double or triple price, but I cannot imagine that we would have enjoyed it more than the Longchamps Hotel. On the contrary! The Longchamps really has character and a very personal, almost familiar touch. I remember us sitting several times at one of the beautiful terraces talking endlessly into the night. Moments to remember...
A lot of romantic cozy places with chairs and sofas all over the hotel allow you to spend time alone if you are sometimes tired from your travel companion. I have done so a lot - with books or my laptop. The wireless LAN (no additional charge) was working properly, something I really cheerished. Occasionally I was able to watch quietly from the corner hotel owner and manager Hebba Bakri, how she rushed around to run this jewel of a hotel, and I understood from this that she really is the born host. I found her being busy in the morning at 7:30 Am and still being busy in the evening at 8:30 PM. Next time I need to talk to her to find out what she is taking to be 13 hours a day full of power :-)
The breakfast buffet was very good, sometimes perfect. To be honest, if we considered the Longchamps room rate, we did not expect a breakfast buffet, but one of these boring uninspired and poor "continental breakfasts" that are usual for hotels in this price range. And it would have been okay. My friend told me, that he has once before stayed in the Cairo Marriott hotel and paid there only for the breakfast almost as much as we paid for the entire hotel room at the Longchamps. The fantastic Longchamps breakfast even made us waking up early ;-) because we found ourselves enjoying it to sit in the restaurant for an hour or one and a half or more, chatting and chatting... and drinking great, strong European coffee...
A big problem was that we found it being difficult to book a room at the Longchamps, due to the fact that many people are obviously having the same desire.
To sum up all my impressions and experiences: I would recommend the Longchamps Hotel for people who appreciate it to stay at a relaxing place that has atmosphere and style, something you can't get often at big chain hotels. And, of course, for people that try to spend their money well-considered... :-)
