The area of Saqqara is about an hour's drive south of Cairo, for which taking a taxi is really your only option. Saqqara was used as the royal necropolis at the time nearby Memphis was Egypt's capital, back during the Old Kingdom around 3000BC.
The major attraction in Saqqara is the Step Pyramid of Zoser, the first pyramid in the world, constructed around 2700BC, and still in remarkably good condition.
Close by are the stone tombs of family members and ministers, as well as the life-size statue of Zoser outside his pyramid. The smaller pyramid of Teti is possible to walk inside, but the steep passages to the burial chamber deep underground will not be for claustrophobics.
The whole area is well worth a half-day trip from Cairo and a brat taste of Pharaonic Egypt.
