“The bustling heart of Cairo's marketplace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

Hot, busy, noisy, smelly - just great! Khan al Khalili will leave you frustrated, angry, elated and happy all at the same time. Soak up the sights, sounds and smells of old Cairo here, and test your haggling skills to get a bargain on pretty much anything you can think of. Head off the main tourist drag and explore some of the more interesting back alleys where the locals are friendly and enthusiastic. There are good (and cheap) places to eat and drink too - go where the locals go. Learn to speak some Arabic, even just a couple of words, and you will have a much more pleasant experience. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe, if a little overwhelmed at first - but it soon became one of my favourite places.

“A nice bazaar that is a must go for Cairo travellers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

A nice bazaar where you can find many souvenirs and gifts. Within the bazaar, you can coffeeshop serving your Turkish coffee. Tried the Turkish coffee, it's quite a thick coffee though. While walking around, you will be approached by shop owners to take a look at their wares. If possible, do ask an Egyptian to go along with you to prevent any ripoff. A pleasant walk in the bazaar though.

“What a disappointment!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2014

I missed this place my first visit to Egypt, so this time I made it a "must visit". While there are SO many shops inside with such a great assortment of trinkets and treasures to take home...I was ready to leave within the first 30 minutes. The amount of haggling here is HORRIBLE!!! I have seen haggling at the Pyramids and in Sharm and other areas, but this place is SO BAD! They don't just try to get you to stop at their shop, they literally get IN your face. Even after a polite "shukran" or "no thank you", they continue to keep in your face. My Egyptian husband would have to tell them "shukran" 4 or 5 times and they still would not give up. Finally my hard glare would make them stop. When you walk into a shop, they will follow you like a lost puppy and feel the need to tell you what every item in their shop is. I understand this is their money maker....but this is exactly how you scare off tourists! Even the restaurants there do the same thing. They literally have people lined up at the sidewalk to try and bring you in...and every 2 seconds someone asks you to enter. My husband and I would be standing and looking at something and talking to one another and they would come right between us and interrupt us to try and sell something. I was so saddened by this as I was excited to shop here because of the huge assortment of items...but I will never return here again. Not worth the headache or hassle. I hope they one day realize its ok to invite into your shop, but stop at that, stop pressuring people and learn what "no thank you" means.

“The heart of Cairo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

The place is magical, the narrow alleyways, the shops, the Mosque and the busy atmosphere. although the whole experience of the place might not be everyone's cup of tea, it's still a must to visit at least once. I personally go every time I'm in Cairo.

The heart of old Cairo, everything Egyptian, in one place. History, architecture, culture, people, food, souvenirs and really everything.

BE WARE OF BEGGARS, HUSTLERS AND SOLICITORS, while they are mostly harmless, they nag a lot, try to get you to come into their shops, you just need to ignore them, politely thank them and walk away.

always bargain and pay half the initial price.

enjoy
