“A great little hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

This hotel with historic associations is, admittedly, looking a little tired (it will be undergoing major renovation soon). However, the location is absolutely fantastic, giving a wonderful view (particularly at night) onto the Nile which beats that offered by any of the monolithic 5 star hotels in the city. Staff were extremely helpful and spoke perfect English. A great little hotel which deserves a visit.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for Nile view - this is essential

An excellent hotel in Cairo center facing river Nile warm reception and service , only the six floor in operation and it seems recently renovation was completed , big rooms , great view specially at night , excellent breakfast in that old oriental restaurant , the most excellent and at same time worst item is the location , just stone through from Tahrir square , its not expression but actually fact next morning the staff closed the restaurant curtains and next the windows while demonstrators throw stones against police which just stand in front of hotel and of course no taxis or metro and the police forces just protect us till the Nile shore

This hotel has great location-just 10min walking to the museum and right next to Nile river. Unfortunately we didn't find any other things to do nearby like shops or bars(may be we didn't know where to go). The hotel is clean, but old. People are kind and the service good, only barman didn't speak well English. If you find good price is good 4 star hotel with history(probably one of the oldest in Cairo). There is bank for exchange on the ground floor and souvenir shop, as well as travel agency and taxi service. Food in the restaurant is good, but expensive for Cairo. Breakfast very good and lot of choices- from pastry to bread and sausages, eggs and also local food. Is difficult to sleep from the noise of the street, as the windows are very old and do not stop the noise at all, so higher floor is better. Generally good experience.

Room Tip: better on higher floor and with Nile view

We recently stayed here for a total of 4 nights. The common areas are lovely but the rooms are tire, in particular the mattresses and carpeting. Bathrooms need a good cleaning with mold in the showers and on the floors. Staff were very good, but the hotel needs an injection of cash and TLC.

Room Tip: Nile views a must

- I travel a lot and rarely would rate a hotel as very good however the Shepheard is one. An excellent location, spacious, well kept and clean rooms, and the staff went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. It is well managed and they are very consciences of their guest safety and security. Very reasonable priced for excellent value. I would highly recommend the Shepheard to everyone who is planning a visit to Cairo for the first time and especially to those who regularly travel there and have not had the pleasure of being one of their guests.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Nile view - it's a small amount an well worth it.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

We stayed two nights at the beginning of July. Shepheard wasn't our first choice, but I'm so glad we ended up staying there. The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful, the room was spacious and clean, and despite a rather noisy air conditioner, very comfortable. The maintenance staff did try to repair the AC but it was a more difficult job than expected and, since we were leaving the next day, we told them not to worry. Breakfast was excellent - I've never seen such a varied and plentiful buffet in all my visits to Cairo. We did have supper on the roof terrace one evening and, though I was not impressed with the food, they did serve beer and the service was fine. One problem is that the hotel was nearly empty, but this is a result of the decrease in tourism in Egypt since the revolution. That meant that the Asian restaurant, one of my favorites in Cairo, was closed. We found the services good and the staff's attitude welcoming and warm. Because of the excellent location and the good quality of both rooms and service, Shepheard's is a good choice for Cairo travel.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a view of the Nile, so ask before getting your room assignment.
