“the greatest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2010

This was my favorite hotel of our 18 day visit to Egypt. It is five stars by American standards. All the staff is outstanding and helpful. It is immaculate and everything works. The spa is great and free. Location convient to the airport and they have a true free shuttle service. One night we were booked to stay at Fairmont but after seeing our room and the charges for the spa went back to the sonesta. The food was really good and reasonable. I can not say enough good about this hotel.

The room (in the new tower) was very nice and clean. Except that the A/C was really noisy and made it hard to sleep. Apparently, it is normal that windows don't open at all. I did find the hotel overpriced for the kind of amenities offered and no breakfast. Breakfast was extra and quite expensive. What really bothered me at the hotel was the staff at the reception that was extremly unfriedly from check-in to check-out and for questions in between. They seemed more concerned with typing my room number into their computer than with anserwing my questions. Worse, even though it was explicitely stated that no deposit was necessary, the whole amount for the stay was charged to my credit card at the time of reservation. When I checked in they wanted to make me pay again claiming that only the first night had been charged. They only believed me when showed them an account statement. When I checked out they wanted to charge me an unexplicable extra fee claiming that the exchange rate had changed in the meantime. (If they hadn't charged it all at the beginning...) It cost too much time and energy and I didn't really appreciated being treated in an unfriendly way as if I had one something wrong with the payment.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the sonesta for 1 night at the end of a cruise with blue water organized with bales worldwide. The room was on the 4th floor and was the largest room we had had on the entire hoilday. The bathroom too was also the largest, however the room felt very business like with no complimentary extras. Others in our group stayed on the 6th and 8th floors, with the couple on the 8th floor saying their room did have complimentary water, fruit and extra bath amenities. The room was very clean with large beds and no problems with traffic noise. For our evening meal we all chose to go to the Lebanese restaurant and met first in Speake's Bar. The bar was clean and tidy with an never ending supply of crisps, peanuts and oilves every time a bowl was emptied. The meal in the restaurant was fantastic. We all went for the set menu of six cold and six hot starters followed by a mixed grill and a course of fruit and baklava to finish. We all had so much food for the starters that only two of us managed to eat all of the mixed grill, with two others unable to eat any! The restaurant very kindly allowed us to take our dessert course back to our rooms. The set menu cost 160 L.E. per person. The breakfast the following morning was also good with plenty of choice.

Ok, this place was sufficient for one night, but really, it was pretty gross. I felt like it was under construction--and it was never going to be finished. Even now, three weeks since I've returned, I'm a little grossed out by it.

The carpet was filthy by anyone's standards. The bathroom was questionable.

The Italian restaurant was pretty decent. The lobby was updated very nicely. Sonesta could definitely spruce this place up a bit. It has the potential to be really great.

A tip...you can get free WiFi in the Italian restaurant. It didn't work in the lobby or the rooms without paying some ridiculous fee.

We stayed in Sonesta for few days as part of package tour. Our experience was good apart from one which I would like to share. For breakfast they have a tendency to make nonwhite people sit in a separate room which wasn't very nice. In our group we were all Indians and inspite of main breakfast area 75 % free, they made us sit in the adjoining room. On our first day we didn't realise this but when they did it on second day, we fought with them. It was clearly visible that they were separating people on the basis of colour,

I stayed here for one night on a long-ish layover in Cairo. I've visited the city a number of times. The hotel arranged a driver to pick me up at the airport... this service was very efficient. Check in, etc. was also very efficient and pleasant. My room was in a "new tower" and was extremely fresh, clean, and quiet. I returned in the morning to the airport by way of the hotel shuttle. The hotel is quite conveniently located for the airport, but I would not recommend it for a longer stay in Cairo, as it is quite distant from the city center. It seemed to be frequented by tour groups either just arriving or departing the next day. Overall, a good choice.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2010

I used to believe to Trip Advisor's Hotel rating but now realized this is not reliable source to get right information. This hotel far way from 5 stars hotel. Lobby is very small. There are no place to seat in the lobby, they practically have 4 chars at the entrance, 2 chairs in front of reception and 1 sofa in front of cashier of the hotel. Most of the day these chairs are occupied by limo drivers, tour guides and some kind of security people. So there is no chance for you to seat at the lobby. Every night they have wedding parties. I guess that way this hotel is making money. At evening this tiny lobby of the hotel is full of the wedding guests, musicians and again limo drivers. The biggest part of the lobby occupies pastries shop with huge empty display. There are very few pieces of pastries and couple of cakes are scattered behind long and massive glass display. I wonder if the hotel making more money from the rent for this empty pastry shop?

Free internet in the lobby only is pain. It is very slowly, it takes hours to download your regular e-mails (without attachment), sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If you want wireless in the room it will cost you $10 per 24 hours with the same speed.

There is a bar in the lobby where old Russian lady sings songs and Egyptian fella is pretending that he is playing keyboard. Bar will charge you for this an entertainment taxes (although very small amount but nevertheless). Of course all drinks are over priced that only fit to category of 5 stars in this hotel.

Pool is small and pool beds are limited. I came at 2 pm and beds were not available and I waited about 15 min before somebody left the pool and I got the bed. It is so many empty space in the yard where the pool is and I don't understand why hotel management wouldn't provide more chairs and beds?

Breakfast buffet has small selection of food: (2-3 types of cheese), 2 types of juice same everyday (mango and orange) and other choice are quite few. The same restaurant serves dinner buffet at the evening. I wouldn't recommend to anybody to try it. It is tasteless and doesn't worth $30. Although it is buffet, they will charge you 12% service charge.

Rooms: I had problem with flushing toilet. I asked hotel to fix it, but still didn't worked well. TV is from the mid-20th century and you cannot see any numbers on the remote. I asked to change remote, they brought remote with visible numbers but battery was dead. Bed sheets are not changed every day, used shampoo and shower bottles haven't been removed from the bath tub. Room key-card is pain. I had to go downstairs every time I had to go to the room and recharge it again. Receptionist blamed me saying that I probably carry room card next to mobile phone, therefore they discharge every time. It wasn't true, because I carried my mobile in the bag and card in the pocket of pants.

Don't dare take taxi cab from the hotel. They overcharge 5-times. For instance, I asked how much from the hotel to Zamalek area, hotel taxi asked for 100 LE ($20), I used white taxi from the street with meter it cost 20 LE ($4).

This hotel is not good neither for business travelers nor for leisure travelers.
