“decent place to stay but far away”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2009

Stayed here in nov 2008. I submitted a review (maybe I accidentally deleted it)but it was not posted.

The Concorde El Salam is located in Heliopolis, a supposedly affluent suburb of Cairo. The area nearby the hotel was rather dirty, unpleasant and quite busy. However, the hotel property has all the luxuries (ie pool, spa and fitness area) one would expect from a resort styled hotel. The common areas of the hotel are well appointed with nice reception area, quaint coffee bar and sitting area opposite reception and pleasant on site restaurants. The back grounds of the property are nicely appointed with large clean resort styled pool, deck with several loungers as well as large open lawn area for taking a stroll. The rooms too are fairly nice and reasonably large but could do with a thorough cleaning.

On the downside there are plenty of issues with the Concorde. The distance to the city and sites are very far . Eventhough they offer a free shuttle into the city by the museum, the transit time depending on traffic ( Cairo is always crazy busy) can be in excess of 1 hour and that is only to the city. To get to Giza, bazaar Khan el Khalili, Saqqara and other areas will require you to hire a taxi or find other means of transport. To get back to the hotel is your own responsibility.
Another issue I had with Concorde is the hidden pricing system they seem to embrace. Hotel staff are more than eager to help but at a price. I don't mind tipping and I understand that many Egyptians live on low wages but being followed around the fitness area by an employee expecting a tip for nothing or having to tip staff for walking me to a new room because the hotel made a mistake with my reservation is ridiculous.
The second day here we ate in the restaurant serving continental and hot buffet. When I inquired about the price the waitress informed us that continental charge was $10 and the combination of continental and hot $20. We chose the continental and the waitress proceeded to show us which tables we could choose from. We went up grabbed coffee, pastries and fruit . Shortly after our waitress came back to the table to regretfully inform us that the fruit is part of the hot buffett and we would be charged $20 rather then $10. On another occasion we went to concierge services for directions. The employee was pleasant and helpful but after helping she informed us that there was a fee for her service. I don't mind paying for service but please let me know up front.

Other problems that I experienced:
1) Water temp fluctuations made showering unpleasant
2) Wall safe scewed into drywall not wallstud or concrete floor. I was able to remove safe from wall with moderate pulling force

Other positives about this hotel
1)Close to airport
2)will hold luggage free of charge while visiting other cities
3)The coffe bar reasonably priced and great drinks

To sum things up the Concorde is a pleasant place if you don't mind being far from attractions. For overnight stay close to airport the location is great. However I would recommend staying on Zamalek, an upscale and pleasant surburb/island very close to downtown Cairo.

Happy travels Egypt is a wonderful place

Stayed here twice in one week. The hotel is near the airport, 15 mins journey even in Cairo traffic, it is clean and comfortable. Get a room which does not face onto the central courtyard as every night there is signing or some sort of entertainment which may go on past midnight.

Useful shuttle bus to the airport. Hotel is used by airline crews

Excellent! A true oasis in the (driving) madness of Cairo! Highly recommended!

Great beds! Great pillows!
Very good to great food!
Excellent service!
Polite and very helpful staff!

Much better than any European hotel I stayed in while travelling for business. Great value for money (when compared what you get for the same ammount of money anywhere in Europe)

This is the second time I have stayed at the Concorde El Salam in Cairo, the first being back in 2006. This is a fantastic hotel and I would strongly recommend it to other visiting Cairo.

The hotel is close to the airport and well located for Cairo in general. The décor is fantastic, of a very high standard. I have added photos for others to see. My favourite part of the hotel is the terrace outside by the swimming pool. This is where you can dine in the evening and watch the entertainment. The food is also nice.

The rooms are very nice, I was on the executive floor as this was a work trip. The room was peaceful with a nice view out of the window. The air conditioning was also effective and quite, not that I keep it on at night. The hotel has plenty of amenities, there is a Sushi restaurant, not that I visited along with some shops selling clothes.

The only gripe is that when sitting at the bar, I saw freshly squeezed lemon juice being topped up with water from a tap and ice cubes extracted from a finished drink and put into a fresh one (not nice!). Saying that, go for bottle drinks and NO ICE and you will be fine.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Cairo.

We have just returned from a 10 day trip to Egypt for my 40th Birthday celebrations and picked the Concorde El Salam in Cairo as the third hotel we stayed in on this trip. This was a one night stay close to the airport to make our return flight and travel easier. The Concorde is rated 5 star - although you will find that 5 stars is often very differently interpreted between hotels in Egypt and the price structure better indicates the quality of accommodation rather than the star rating. We stayed in a more expensive ‘executive suite & dine in style package’ which included free soft drinks, free buffet breakfast and three course evening meal for 2. Unfortunately my partner and I both had sickness & delicate Egyptian bellies by the time we arrived - so we never took advantage of all the food and it was a waste to us. We did use room service which was ok and the room thankfully had a great selection of free movies to watch on a HD TV – which we watched several. The furnishings of the hotel are a bit tired and dated – on closer inspection it is not spotlessly clean either (light switches dirty finger marks ( of several months of use) in our room and the glass ware in the bathroom and the minibar needed a good wash before use! The bed was great – massive and comfortable. There was a pool area – but we never saw anyone but the hotel staff laid on the loungers- which put us off a bit. There were several restaurants on site- but we never tried these so I can’t comment. The service and standards at the hotel were fine and we found most staff friendly and helpful. The grounds of the hotel looked to be under construction and the surrounding area and view from out of our window was a bit urban industrial. The free shuttle bus to the airport was a bonus – although we did feel a bit like 2nd class citizens when we were asked to wait for a group of airline cabin crew to be taken first – obviously they use the hotel frequently and were given priority! Overall the hotel was ok but probably wouldn’t stay again. Better for the business traveller than the tourist!

We had a lovely time here - the hotel was lovely, the room was spacious and the beds were comfortable! The food was fabulous, we were enjoying Sea Bass for lunch and a choice of everything you can imagine in the evening every night, we ate in the Italian on Valentines night and had a gorgeous gourmet meal, fois gras, lobster tail - yummy! The beach was clean and sandy with a jetty to the sea for snorkelling and the pool area was also fabulous, the staff were all lovely, attentive and efficient... We will return...

We stayed in this hotel purely because we needed a place to sleep after returning late from Luxor, and prior to an early departure to Amman. We thought we'd choose a more expensive, but quieter, hotel in closer proximity to the airport than in downtown Cairo, hoping to maximise our sleep. Sadly, it was only more expensive, being neither close nor quiet.
The hotel shuttle never arrived. After battling the hordes of cabbies, we wrangled our way out of the airport and to the hotel. Not close to the airport. And busy.
Upon arrival we wearily pleaded for a quiet room; we were enthusiastically assured that "we would be very happy with the quietest room in the hotel". Sadly this was not the case. We managed a total of 2 hours sleep due to the incessant thumping of techno dance music, ostensibly from a subdued wedding party that was due to finish at midnight. At 3 am the room was still reverberating. Multiple calls to reception were of no avail; rather they were exercises in inducing malignant hypertension with the attendant risk of seizure activity. After being assured we'd be rang back, we never were. When following this up, we were laughed at. In response to the complete denial of any noise in the hotel whatsoever, and after declining a request to visit our room to satisfy themselves that we were indeed not suffering auditory hallucinations, the phone line again went dead, leaving us in an acoustic hell-hole.
Upon checking out at 5am we were asked if we enjoyed our stay. Upon stating that we were incredibly annoyed as the hotel failed the most basic requirement of such an establishment (i.e. the provision of a place to sleep), we received a "excellent, we hope to see you again". Hopeless.
