“Still a very good choice in Cairo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Have tried most of the 5 stars in Cairo but the Marriott is my favourite. It's not quite the smartest or swishest but its rooms are very comfortable and all have large balconies overlooking the beautiful gardens and pool. Pros are the location in zamalek, a safe and relatively quiet area with a host of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars within walking distance; the wonderful garden cafe; comfortable beds; and its friendly and mostly professional staff. I also find them very generous with late check outs!

Only cons, and these are not major, are the old CRT TVs in many rooms, the very high prices charged in the hotel's restaurants, and the breakfast buffet, which is not the best.

For those wanting more affordable drinks and snacks than in the hotel mini bar, there is an excellent wine and beer shop Drinkies just outside the zamalek entrance on 26th July street and also a nearby petrol station with a mini supermarket.

Recommended nearby restaurants are Bodega, Aubergine and Trattoria.

Overall a good choice, which is why I keep coming back, despite the cheaper and newer alternatives.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor overlooking the Nile or gardens.

Enjoyed this hotel. I think it used to be a palace or something. Beautiful. Nice rooms, reasonable price and especially liked the location - next to the Nile. Also not too far from the Cairo Museum of Antiquities. See our photo of the view from our room. Good food for breakfast too.

We chose this hotel during our trip to Cairo and we really liked this place. The facilities provided by the hotel were top notch and the hotel had variety of restaurants to choose from.

The hotel was also at picturesque location very close to Nile. The staff at the hotel are courteous and they made our stay memorable.

Room Tip: Choose Deluxe rooms which give option to exclusive lobby.

A great hotel, and have been in the hotel for several times on long stay basis, this time the waiters are talking in a very loud voice with each others in the garden area in front of the Egyptian night cafe, it's really pathetic. Can't sit quietly to read my book.

We had overall a very pleasant stay at the Cairo Marriott, for 2 nights before our Nile cruise and 3 nights after. But there were some hitches with the service that really shouldn't happen when a place charges this much.

First, let me say that the hotel facilities are absolutely beautiful. The pool is gorgeous -- long heated lap pool, partially covered so you can stay warm in a little cabana area, or swim out under the night sky with steam rising off of the water. Divine. Take your turn in the jacuzzi, sauna, steam room -- it's all there.

The selection of restaurants at the hotel is pretty great. We tried several of them and examined the menus for all. Egyptian Nights is actually the best. You can get a generous portion for your meal for under US $10. Sure, you can get food even cheaper if you venture out into the city, but this is totally worth it for a convenience and safety perspective, and the food was great. Relax in the courtyard and watch women baking the bread in a wood fired oven -- and then try it fresh out of the oven and piping hot. Yum! Here you can also get a hookah/sheesha and enjoy this very Egyptian pastime outside in the fresh air, without the oppressive smoke of most Cairo restaurants. Lovely! And in the evenings they have live entertainment.

Now, the less positive. We booked this hotel as part of a tour package and I think we'd have been even more disappointed if we had paid the list price -- yowza. The public parts of the hotel are gorgeous (you are staying in a palace, hello!) but the rooms themselves have worn carpeting and dated-looking furniture. Standing inside your room you could imagine that you are in a Days Inn in Toledo, Ohio. Also, it really annoys me that a hotel could charge this much and not include wifi in the price.

Our breakfast buffet was included -- but hold on. We arrived at 4 a.m. and were given an early check-in. While we waited for our room to be ready we went to the restaurant area and through a misunderstanding (not the hotel's fault) we were under the impression that the breakfast buffet was included even though it was the day of our check-in. We were so tired that we ate almost nothing -- my scrambled eggs were actually cold because they were just setting up the buffet, and that killed my appetite. A couple of days later when we went to check out there was a charge for US $60 for breakfast for two.

We tried to resolve this when we returned after our cruise. I waited in line at the front desk for more than 30 minutes as I watched the man from the bell station wave others waiting in line ahead of me as stations opened up at the counter. The only explanation I can think of is that I was not dressed as nicely as the business travelers waiting to check in. Four or five people who got in line behind me were waved to go through ahead of me. So frustrating! We may not have elite status but our rooms were paid for just like anyone else's. When I finally got to the desk, I asked if we could be refunded the breakfast price since we were leaving too early to enjoy the buffet on our last day. I was told no both by the man at the counter and by his manager. According to "the rules," they said, this would have been allowable except that we had gone on the cruise and then returned so it was considered two separate stays. They were unwilling to make an exception so we paid $60 for some cold eggs, a muffin and a banana.

Although the staff means well, they have some way to go before rising to the level of international Marriott hotel quality. While we were at breakfast the staff hovered and you would be asked for your room number by 4 to 6 different people during the course of your meal. Not very welcoming. We were on our honeymoon and informed them of this. We were not given a nicer room, although we did get a cake -- the night before we left, too late to share with anyone in our group, or to eat more than a small piece ourselves since we had just returned from dinner. At one point I was looking for a safety pin so that I could wear a head scarf when out and about in the city. When we inquired at the front desk whether they had any safety pins, we were simply told "No, sorry." For truly good customer service, the answer should be, "Yes, we will get one for you right away" -- especially for an item this small.

Room Tip: Just ask for the quietest room. Lots of street noise.

Cairo Marriott is a hotel and casino located conveniently in the middle of Cairo. Accommodation is in two towers at opposite ends of the property, with the reception, casino and bulk of dining options housed in the centre complex.

CHECK IN:
Our driver dropped us off at the entrance to one of the towers. Our bags were promptly picked up by the porter. Careful entering these doors if it has been raining, the floor is marble and extremely slippery when wet! There were no signs to point us to reception so we walked around the ground floor in an effort to find reception to check in. We were told to take the elevators to the first floor. Upon exiting the elevator there were again no signs so we had a mission on our hands. It turned out we had to walk down one long corridor, make a left and walk down that corridor into the centre complex to find reception. Signs would have been helpful! Check in was fast and efficient.

ROOMS: (twin share with my brother)
We had a room in the Gezira tower, which overlooks the centre courtyard and roof of the centre complex - not a great view, but we were in a standard room so my expectations weren't high.
Our room was a twin - and we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was twin double beds (rather than the twin singles we are used to). However, the beds were quite hard and mine had a really annoying lump in the middle which made sleep quite uncomfortable. Additionally, I am 6'1" and I had to sleep diagonally across the bed to lie flat. The beds were simply not long enough.
The bathroom was nice and comfortable with a shower over bath. The shower height was adjustable and blasted at a good pressure for a very comfortable shower.
The TV was an old 4:3 CRT television. How many stations broadcast in a square format these days? It was very dated and obviously did not support widescreen which all stations broadcast in. Also, of course, it was not possible to plug HDMI, USB, VGA or any devices into the television.
Internet in the rooms is charged in 24-hour, 7 day or monthly plans. Internet is free in the centre lobby bar area, but that is quite a walk away. It was quite disappointing internet was not complimentary in the rooms in this day and age (and at US$200 per room per night).
At the start of our stay there was one complimentary bottle of water provided per room per day, however when we asked for an additional bottle per day it was provided.

FOOD:
Buffet breakfast was good with plenty of chefs around to top up food and make pancakes and omelettes to order. It was quite annoying how there were never cereal spoons on the settings (each of 3 mornings) and I had to ask for a spoon every time. This should be a standard item on a breakfast setting. We were also asked if we wanted tea or coffee 15mins after we had sat and almost finished eating. Overall, service was friendly and the food decent. It was hard to find Omar's Cafe for breakfast as there was no signs for it until you are literally outside the door!
Dinner at the American buffet diner Roy's Kitchen was good, but nothing to write home about.
Room service food came promptly and it was good to see the server present and show the food to the guest before getting a signature to charge it.

FACILITIES:
The fitness centre gym is very large and I was quite impressed with it. The pool was heated to 28 degrees C and very nice to swim in.

CHECK OUT:
Was very fast and efficient and completed within two minutes.

SUMMARY:
Pros:
Decent, centralised accommodation in the middle of Cairo
Friendly staff
Decent food (the Bakery is a charm)
Complimentary wifi in lobby bar
Great fitness centre

Cons:
Hard to find reception if dropped at a Tower entrance
NO signs to show where anything is until you're on top of it
Pay Internet in rooms
Hard lumpy bed
TV is dated and needs replacing

While my stay at the Cairo Marriott was reasonably comfortable, in future I would stay at the Sofitel Cairo el Gezirah, which has extremely comfortable beds and complimentary internet in the rooms at a slightly cheaper rate.
