Owner description: The Al-Tannoura show takes place at Wekalet El Ghoury Each Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. Wekalet El Ghouri is an architecturally stunning arts center in El Azhar area in Central Cairo, operating under the Ministry of Culture and the Cultural Development Fund (CDF).Since finalizing restorations to the Wekalet in October 2005, it has become a hot-spot for organizing cultural events. The most popular being the bi-weekly El Tannoura dance performance. The performance is similar to the more commonly known whirling dervishes; however this version of the indigenous dance incorporates instruments and other additional elements.

“Authentic, moving and vibrant cultural experience in Cairo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

A performance by the Al-Tannoura Dance Troupe is a must see for visitors to Cairo looking to go beyond the typical tourist experience. At 8PM on Wednesdays and Saturdays these Sufi Whirling Dervishes perform at the marvelously perserved Medieval caravanserai Wikala al-Ghauri in Islamic Cairo's Khan al-Khalili market. The hour-long show features traditional music, singing and dancing. The experience is mesmerizing and moving - these are performers, but the spiritual origins of the dance is palpable. The show used to be free but now costs 30LE (about 5USD) for foreigners - still a steal for the quality of the experience. We arrived at 6:30 in order to secure a seat.

“Tradition non touristy Egypt. The shows on Monday Wednesday's And Saturday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

This was not free anymore it now costs 30 Egyptian pound for foreigners but it was worth every cent it's not touristy at all yet!!!!!! which kind of makes me not want to give it a good review so that it can stay very traditional and not be over run by tourists and in turn become another place to get hassled. So anywyas the whole performance was so amazing the band starts at 8pm followed by the dancers the show goes for 1 1/2 hours. If u want to get good seats or seats at all be there before 7. Well there you go hope u make time for this and enjoy the show. P.S keep an eye on the guy on symbals in the band he is hilarious

“Magnificent experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

This is one of the best experiences I ever had in Egypt. This is a state of the art Sufi dance show, and it's free! The Sufis are an ancient mystic cult within Islam that dances to bring themselves in a state of trance to be closer to God, and the rest of us gets to enjoy watching the beautiful, colorful and rhythmic ceremony. The location is very central in Cairo off Khan Al-Khalili, so make sure to plan a visit to the show. Get there early for front row seats. I won't say more about it, it has to be experienced :)
