“The Hostel Concept is Alive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

I stayed at Dina's Hostel for 3 nights in February 2013. I had written to several hostels in advance of the trip, where I selected Dina's from the prompt and clear email communications and positive reviews by others.

Overall Value -- I stayed in an 8-bed mixed dormitory. I was interested in the single bedroom but they did not have availability for all of my nights. The dormitory bed was only 50 EGP (about US$7.50) per night, and was clean, safe, and allowed interaction with the other guests. The rate included a healthy breakfast every morning. There is a large communal area where you can surf internet, read, or chat with other guests. There is a shared kitchen where you could store and prepare food, and there is an honor system for beverages.

Location -- The location is excellent in downtown Cairo, in walking distance to Tahrir Square and Egyptian Museum, and about 5 EGP (about US$0.75) taxi ride (make sure on the meter!) to the traditional Islamic areas of Cairo (Bein al-Qasreem, Darb Al-Ahmar).

Cleanliness -- The beds, bathrooms, and common areas were kept clean by the service staff.

Internet -- Strong and fast wireless internet through the common areas and bedrooms. No issues.

Service -- As mentioned earlier, email communications were clear and prompt. The reception staff gave good recommendations for the many restaurants and sights around Cairo, and would write names of places in Arabic for me to show to others on the street when lost. Dina's Hostel offers good value tours with driver and/or guides to popular itineraries outside of Cairo -- I used their service for the Pyramids day tour.

It's only been a handful of times that I have stayed at hostels where there was a good feeling from the facilities, owners, and other guests. I think that Dina's hostel has something special going, where it's great to know that the hostel concept is still alive in some cities.

Clean, convenient, safe, friendly and a great bargain—that’s Dina’s Hostel.
Located away from the tourist areas, and right in the thick of the energy and vibrant life that make Cairo so memorable, Dina’s is near local restaurants, shops, and transportation. The rooms are large and spotless. And, they are quiet—a rarity in Cairo. The ensuite and shared bathrooms are impeccable, the beds comfortable. Water, soft brinks and beer are available in the fridge; payment is by the honor system. Internet is available for 5EP per hour.
Dina’s is in a series of old Cairo apartments on the fifth floor of a building. The entrance is in an alley, and while there is a sign on the street, it’s easy to miss. The alley is a short walk from the corner of Mohammed Farid Street. Google Dina’s address: (42 Abdel Khalek Sarwar, Cairo Egypt) to see it on a street map. There is an ATM just before the alley that leads to Dina’s entrance. Dina is currently expanding the hostel into another series of apartments on the same floor. There is an elevator.
Breakfasts are simple, tasty and more than adequate to start the day.
Airport transfers are reliable, and cheaper than anything you can find at the airport or on the street. I think we used it 5 times, including once to pick us up at the airport and drop us at the bus terminal when we were just passing through Cairo from Jordan on our way to Siwa. Like the staff at the hostel, the drivers were friendly and helpful.
The museum, Tahrir Square and the Turgoman bus station are easy 15-25 minute walks. Sunday nights there is a movie series. Dina’s also offers tours that are fairly and reasonably priced. We did Dina’s overnight camping trip to the White Desert. At 499 EP it was a great bargain.
We also liked that Dina created this hostel on her own and is committed to women’s issues.
Eating hint: there is a great kushary place, El Tahrir Kushary, nearby. It’s about 5-8 minutes’ walk across the street and to the right from Dina’s. It’s beyond Radio Shack. For 7 EP you can get a large kushary. They also have small and medium. Two of us ordered ‘large with rice’ and a drink and it cost about 25EP for two of us. ‘Rice’ is actually a creamy ride pudding, and delicious. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. The GAD restaurant on 26th July street is another story. Recommended by Lonely Plant, the food is decent and cheap. It was however not always a great experience. Every time we ordered chicken we were told by the distinctly cold and unfriendly ‘maitre d’ ‘there is no chicken’…even though people all around us were eating chicken and were served chicken even after we were told there was none. That happened twice.
We stayed in Dina’s Hostel 3 times in late 2012 and early 2013 as we travelled in and out of Egypt and Cairo. We’re both men in our very Late 60s, probably the oldest folk at the hostel while we were there, but the atmosphere is open, friendly and helpful. We will certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: We stayed in 3 rooms on 3 occasions. All were fine.

My girlfriend and I very much enjoyed our stay in Dina's Hostel. The staff were always on hand and very helpful. We had a room with a very high ceiling and it was very spacious. A mosquito-repellant plug was provided. The wet room ensuite worked very well and the hot water was good. Bottled water could be purchased at a reasonable price (comparable to the convenient stores nearby - so it saves you the walk). Breakfast was a boiled egg with croissant, some cheese and fruit (guava) which was decent. The airport pickup that was arranged was great value (same price as a taxi without the fuss of haggling) and he was efficient, charming and very helpful. And what's more, you're smack dab in the middle of town and they don't shove their tours in your face. Lovely.

Dina's staff and Dina herself were very friendly and accommodating. My friend was ill and staff took him to a doctor and even offered to pay for his doctor's visit (which he kindly refused). They picked us up at the airport for free (we tipped the driver) and they drove us back to the airport for a reasonable fee. They have dorm rooms, but the single and double rooms are so reasonable that it would be silly not to get a private room. A self-serve fridge is stocked with water, soda and beer (sign-up sheet to tally a tab). They have laundry service and internet. Online booking and quick replies to email queries. Would definitely stay there again.

This hostel is clean and comfortable. It has an excellent common area for relaxing and taking meals that offers guests the opportunity to mingle and socialise. The staff are a young group of people who are extremely helpful and informative. They are able to direct guests towards attractions as well as helping with hints and guidance.

The location of the hostel in downtown is walking distance to Attaba metro station (5 minutes). It is a comfortable 15 minute walk to Midan Tahir and the Egyptian Museum.

The only negative about this hostel is that their booking and reservation system is a bit shambolic. Fix this up and they'd be even better.

We stayed at Dina's for a few nights in December, and loved it. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the hostel is clean, and the breakfast is good. The hostel is within walking distance from lots of sights in central Cairo, bang in the middle of downtown (but contrary to popular belief, Cairo was completely safe to visit at the time!), and it's located in an old French colonial building with lots of character. Coming up the stairs from the hustle and bustle of downtown Cairo (and its insane traffic!) felt like entering a different world, as the hostel is very peaceful and atmospheric. Our stay at Dina's ended up being one of our favourite experiences in Egypt, a special thank you to Nena and Mohammed for making us feel so welcome!
