I booked our week-long stay in this hostel (through booking.com) before the negative reviews started appearing and I regret it.
Upon arrival the staff tried to sell us their somewhat overpriced tours when all we wanted to do was go to bed. The guy started drawing a map, which I thought would be helpful to get us around Cairo - but no, it was a map of Egypt with all their tour options around the country pointed out. It was about midnight and we weren't feeling very patient.
The room had no ventilation, virtually no natural light, mosquitoes, mildewy sheets and a smelly bathroom. Breakfast consisted of stale pita bread, jam, soft cheese and tea. There was no drinking water readily available (even to buy) on site.
The staff were friendly but made me feel somewhat uncomfortable. On the upside, there was free wifi, except the signal was very weak in our room.
Our stay wasn't completely awful, but I definitely wouldn't book the Qabana Hostel (or even the Alexander Hotel) again.
