“Back in the day.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2015

Groppi used to be THE cafe to go to . It was elegant , sophisticated and chic... A lot has changed . Groppi is no longer the famous place where the famous go ...but you can still see remnants of its glorious past and thats a lovely thing. This was the grande dame of Cairo cafes when down town was where it was all happening . They still do a nice sandwich , a decent coffee and good ice-cream . look around at the walls the ceilings to get an idea of what I am talking about .

“Drop in for a quick coffee”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2015

A great reminder of Cairo ' s better days. This century old iconic patisserie and chocolate maker offers a lovely flashback with its high ceilings and breath taking art deco. Have a coffee and gateaux overlooking Talaat Harb Square but don't expect 5 star service. It has come to be quite run down but still a nice getaway when your downtown near Tahrir square.

“Not great coffee”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2015

It's a famous location but the service isn't great and the Turkish coffee isn't good either. Also they hide the fact there is a service charge and tax!

“Must visit!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2014 via mobile

The food and beverage are just ok anyway eating is not the reason you want to visit groppi.. the main reason is the beautiful atmosphere full of history... this cafe is one of the unique places you must visit in downtown cairo

“Historical value only”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2014

Located in downtown Cairo for the past 100 years or so, Groppi can claim to be an essential part of any stroll through downtown. Unfortunately however the historical value, its grandeur and architecture is where it ends! The service is dreadful! We waited for a good 20 minutes before anyone cared to bring us water and take our order. The eclairs (which Groppi is quite famous for) only started to arrive at 11:00 am! The maintenance of the place is quite poor with cracked floors, paint peeling, chipped teapots etc...

Bottom line, this is a must visit as part of any tour of downtown Cairo or even after a visit to the Egyptian museum just for its historical value, however don't expect much in terms of service!
