“Not Impressed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

A four day cruise on the Nile Commodore as part of a Saga Tour. I found this boat to be old and tired and apart from the stunning views whilst cruising, if I had booked a a two week holiday then I would have been leaving. I had room 214 which is next to the reception desk, the shower leaked a lot when used and the constant ringing of the phone at reception could be heard quite clearly.
The food was of a good standard and the pastry chef is wonderful but apart from that I cannot recommend this boat at all unfortunately.

“Nile Legacy!!!! AMAZING!!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

We have just returned from our weeks cruise down the Nile on board Thompsons Legacy. This was my first time in Egypt and it certinally won't be my last!!! On arrival to the boat we were greeted by staff who were available to make sure check in ran as smooth as possible and waitied only a short period while our luggage was brough on board. If you intend to do any excursions be prepared for early starts, Abu Simble has a start time of 3.30 but well worth it. Each group has a dedicated Egyptologist to guide you around on excursions. We had a guide called Emed, he was absolutely fantastic, approachable and was always available on board for any questions we had. The rooms and standard of cleanliness were second to none. Rooms were cleaned twice daily and it was a pleasure to see what towel decorations had been made for us :) The staff are helpfull and polite, glasses are filled and replaced at a speedy rate. At mealtimes you have a dedicated waiter who will take care of any needs you may have. Tipping is advised and our rep Alan gave all this information on the first night at our welcome meeting he also gave valubal advice about sun protection, the local area etc.. Entertainment on board was great, Gemma is the entertainment co-ordinator and does a fantastic job. The locals can be pretty pushy trying to sell items and this can be quite intimidating. Alan gives great advice how to deal with this but also explains tourism in these areas is down by almost 90% wich put things into perspective. I cant recommend this cruise enough, the excurtions are breathtaking and the staff and crew make the journey even better. Some passengers on the last day were annoyed that the all inclusive finished at 12.00 but this made no difference to us as the water was still free and the boat provided afternoon tea before we left. Trasnfers back to the airport for our departure were as smooth as our arrival. A faultless holiday and one we will cherish for ever!!!!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

Brilliant time was had by all on the Nile cruise, food brilliant, drinks ok, the staff fell over them selves to help and serve you, we were made to feel very special, all the trips were very early in the morning, but an eye opener and something you would never forget,.

“5 reasons not to cruise the nile”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

1. Weather:If you don't like sunny weather or sunburn easily, this cruise is not for you.In Western Canada the choice is either 6 months of frigid temperatures or constant rain. Not only was there no rain on the trip we never even saw a cloud. 2.Crowds: If you like socializing while waiting in line or jostling with others when traversing thru narrow passages this trip is not for you. Tourism is down 90% on these cruises. Our small tour group was the only group at several sites including the magnificent Abu Simbel. Get there before the masses return. 3. Exercise: If you preferred exercise is walking from the bar to the restaurant this vacation is not for you. A typical day involves touring archeological sites from early morning (at a leisurely pace) to mid-afternoon. Our guide would accompany us, giving a detailed description of the site, then let us explore on our own. Back to the boat for R&R, supper and/or cruising the nile.4.Friendliness: If you like hostile locals so that you can snarl back at them, this cruise is not for you. Everywhere we went kids would be waving & smiling. (could there be a national media campaign to boot tourism?) All boat staff were exceptionlly polite & accomodating. 5. Newness:You won't find much modernity on this trip. most things are old -extremely old-the archeological sites, the farming methods along the Nile. Even our boat (the Treviata) looked old-Reminded me of an opulent cruise ship from the 50's.(I think was 15 years old.) It had lots of character -large chandelliers and dark wood panelling, very comfortable restaurant &bar. Each room had outside balconies with 2 chairs & a table-very quaint but i preferred sitting on the top deck where you could view bothbanks of the Nile. There were TVs that sometimes worked,a bathtub sized pool,& a capucino bar on the top deck. General comments:We took the 7 day cruise with Insight Vacations. I would call it more of a archeological & history tour rather than a cruise. I believe the 4 day cruise has same amount of cruising but with fewer archeological sites visted. Insight conducts premium tours .Our tour guides (2 Mohammeds @ a fellow from the Nubian village) were very educated & interesting. Our tour started in Cairo (the museum&Mosque&the Giza pyramid light and sound show.)The 1st 2 are must sees the latter v. boring.3 of us males actually dosed off. The tour ended with a tour of the more ancient sites at Memphis.I found these sites more interesting than Giza. Safety: At no time did we feel in any danger. Our guides sheperded us well.Of course there is always some danger when travelling, particularly in the third world. I would rate the danger somewhat higher than having a coffee in a Manhattan office tower & lower that cruising with Carnival Cruise Lines. Wish list : taking the longer cruise from Cairo to Aswan which 1 reviewer said has been reintroduced.

“Sailing Down The Nile”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

We have travelled to Egypt for 15yrs, seen all the sights, only the Nile Cruise we hadn't done, as my husband likes his feet on terrafirma... We went middle of May, with Thomson on the Commodore, not knowing what to expect we were very unsure but wow how wonderful it was. As we had done the trips and knowing how hot it is on these excursions we just wanted to relax on the boat, and thats what we did. I have never been so chilled out not a care in the world it was wonderful. One thing I didn't expect was to be asked to part with £50 for the staff (tipping) this is optional but as a guide line you are told £20 for dining staff/bar etc £20 for guides & £10 for cleaners. this you put in envelopes in a box on reception desk and the money is shared out amongst all the staff, (because some you don't see). You only get told this day before you leave. All in all we had a lovely week, met new friends, just a pity not many people are travelling to Egypt at the moment.
