“Absolutely lovely place and place to vusit uf near by”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

I went there one early morning and there was a ceremony and a lot of people gathered for it. Really nice and calm place.
You can enter the temples even if you are not budist but want to experince the budist spirit. Just to sit and to listen the monk who is reading there.
Also you can walk around, take pictures or just be there to calm the mind and the spirit. Recommend it totally!

“Best Temple in Seoul”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

Do not get too excited, while Bongeunsa Temple is the most interesting of Seoul's Buddhist temples, it is not exceptional. I enjoyed my visit for the pleasant scenery, as well as the location of a temple amidst the bustle of Gangnam. There is a reason Seoul lacks many Buddhist temples, it is primarily because of the last dynasty of Korea being Confucian, not Buddhist.

So if you are in the area around COEX, enjoy a quick respite from the city. However, if you want to see truly exceptional Buddhist temples you must leave Seoul. I recommend Beopjusa, Haeinsa, and Bulguksa temples for authenticity.

“This temple is so beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

We were only staying at Intercontinental so walked there and got lots of beautiful pictures. Feels so peaceful there eventhough it's located within the city. You kind of just forget where you are. Also they have a big buddha statue there and interesting amount of lanterns.

There was a sign saying 'The Seoul City Government must withdraw the plan to expropriate the land from Bongsunsa' meaning that the Seoul City Government wants to take the land away. This is not a UNSCO recognized site, so given that and the sign I wonder what the Seoul City Government wants to do with it.

It is beautiful and next to a quite busy area which gives a juxtaposition that I like. You can do a temple stay or go into buildings and meditate.

“Calm amidst commerce”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

Bongeunsa offers a remarkable contrast to the visitor as it sits right across the Coex Mall and lies in the heart of ritzy Gangnam district. This attraction is definitely worth visiting and spending at least an hour or two. The temple is not one building but a collection of pavilions and halls and statues, each one picturesque and photogenic. Bongeunsa covers an extensive area, and one readily leaves behind the traffic and bustle of Seoul the minute one enters through the main Gate of Suchness. There is no entrance fee and visitors are free to stroll the grounds. Be sure to pick up a complimentary brochure at the information center - this serves an excellent guide for exploring the temple, with most structures numbered and containing descriptions. The smaller temples at the back require some climbing up the hill.

Each temple is photoworthy with the paintings on the walls, highly decorative ceilings and various adornments. There are a lot of details to take in here. Favorite building would have to be the Bell Pavilion (though limited access), as well as the one in front of the Big Buddha which has a lovely painted ceiling.

For those wanting a more immersive visit, the temple also offers various programs, including an overnight templestay which has to be booked 3 weeks in advance. On Thursdays at 2pm, there is a 2.5hour long temple tour, tea ceremony, etc. for foreigners (good for walk-in visitors).

Bongeunsa is a wonderful temple that offers a most pleasant visitation for 1st time visitors of Seoul/South Korea. It provides a welcome opportunity to see traditional Korean art and architecture. Whether shopping or attending a convention in the Coex Mall, Bongeunsa is well-worth crossing the road for! Just head to the northern exit of the mall.
