“Excellent service and fun location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

This hotel is in Gangnam in a great location. The subway is a block away and there is a great street of restaurants with a lot to choose from. The service in the hotel was amazing, the staff could not have been nicer and they didn't accept tips.

Cons- As other reviewers have said, the room (especially the bathroom) needs some upgrades. We got a discounted rate for an event which made it reasonable. It's not worth full price. The beds were a bit hard and the rooms didn't have a lot of storage space. Most of the horizontal surfaces were covered in things for sale from teddy bears to toothpaste. We moved most of it to get some space. The internet is pricey at over $20/day.

Overall, I would still go back at a discounted rate. The location and service made up for the other issues.

Stayed for a night on a business trip. Though the service was first rate, the hotel had a dated feel. Room was decent but not what you would expect from a premium hotel. The dinner at the Japanese restaurant was good. The set menu was quite lavish. The hotel has a decent bar, though you would be wasting your money here as bars outside are equally good and at least 50% cheaper.
If you are planning to stay in the same area, I will recommend J W Marriot instead.

Transportation. We decided to take the Metro (aka subway) to the hotel since public transportation is so easy and inexpensive in Seoul. For those who really want to be independent and are feeling adventurous your first time in Seoul, I would suggest trying out the metro. It was quite convenient. Here is how we got to the Ritz Carlton for those interested:

1. After exiting the Customs gates at the airport, follow the signs posted to the metro station.
2. Go to one of the ticket machines and choose English.
3. Type in Sinnonhyeon for the station the Ritz is at.
4. For the 2 of us, the total cost was W9100 (Approx. US$8.36 or $4.18 / person).
5. You will have to take the following lines and interchanges:
- Incheon Int'l Airport to Gimpo Int'l Airport (via Airport Railway) ~ 30min
- Transfer to Line 9
- Gimpo Int'l Airport to Sinnonhyeon (via Line 9) ~ 40min
* Sinnonhyeon is the last station on the line.
* You will want to take the Express Line as opposed to the "All Stop" line to save you some time. The Express Line skips half the stations on the line and takes you to the end of the line faster.
6. After exiting the train, take Exit 4.
7. When you go up the stairs, keep walking in that direction.
8. After a 2min walk, you will see the Ritz on your left.

Hotel. Upon arrival, the hotel was very empty. We checked in relatively easily. The young lady at the front desk actually took us
to our room and checked us in there. We received an upgrade to a 1 Bedroom Suite. The room was quite large, but was very much lacking in lighting. It reminded me of the older Las Vegas hotels before they started renovating everything. There were only desk and floor lamps and not many ceiling lights. Overall, there just didn't seem to be enough light. The room in general was very clean, however the decor and furniture looked aged and worn. The sofa and seats were torn and frayed. It was about 8pm by the time we settled in, so we went downstairs to eat, however ironically, there was no restaurant in the hotel that served Korean food. There was absolutely everything, but Korean. The only Korean food available was at the buffet, however we weren't interested in the buffet. We thought that was so ironic. In Korea, but no Korean food.

Overall, we both agreed that we wouldn't stay here again. We took a walk in the morning to the COEX mall (about 1 hour round trip walking semi-briskly) and saw that there are actually other hotels in the area that we are very convenient. The Ritz was nothing special. The hotel is starting to show its age and due for some freshening up.

A nice hotel by any other standard -- but not up to one expects at a Ritz Carlton or for the Ritz Carlton prices. Service was good.. Location is good. Lobby is very nice.
BUT -- rooms are dated. Furniture is dated. Bathrooms old and dated. And my bathroom had an honor bar to purchase toothpaste and toothbrush -- this is not Ritz Carlton style. Usually there is a nice complimentary dental kit and shaving kit along with many other amenities. An honor bar for toiletries? I was shocked. I tried to get a glass of wine at the club lounge upon arrival at 9:00pm and was told happy hour is over and I could have juice or water. At other Ritz club lounges or Marriott Exec lounges I stayed at in Asia no problem getting a glass of wine until at least 11:00pm. I did not experience any a/c problems noted in other reviews but temperatures were in 30s at night and 50s in day. If this was a Marriott at Marriott prices I might come back. But I will try the Park Hyatt on next visit to Seoul. Have stayed at The Shilla before which was very nice but the location is not as good.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your comments.
Your feedback will surely help us to improve our service and product.
The chargeable dental kit was a standard practice for all hotels in Korea, but is being phased out, and in our hotel as well.
We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
Yours sincerely,
Marc

I like the location of the Ritz. The Hospitality is excellent. The rooms are a little dated. At the time the gym was being retrofitted and during the day it was loud, so we had to move rooms. The staff was happy to keep moving us until we were satisfied with the room. I would stay there again. However, you have to pay for internet, something I just hate when internet is free everywhere in the city. I'm sure the gym will be very nice after it is finished.

Room Tip: If you don't ask you don't get!

The original hotel used to be called Namseoul hotel when I visited Korea in 1988. After traveling in Shanghai, my expectation was high since the Namseoul hotel changed to higher brand.
The disappointment started when I walked into the small room, and also saw the old built up dust behind the mirrow, and found a nut on the floor. That nut was still there when I checked out of the room after 7 nights stayed.

Breakfast was another disappointment. I stayed in other 5 stars hotel in Seoul and the breakfast was always something to look forward to, but at Ritz Carton was not. The choice was very poor, especially American breakfast style.

One positive note, my husband was sick the day after our arrival, and the chef Chi yang gi was very kind after knowing he was sick, and made abaloni jook for him and me for three days.
He made us feel like we were home with his special attention and kindness.

This is a great hotel:
1. Customer service - very friendly, polite and helpful to anything
2. Room - room is old but still ok except aircond
3. Internet - it will be perfect if hotel can allow multiple device connection and revise the rate as it is quite expensive and many people using free wifi at lobby which only for 2 hrs
4. Location - excellent at Gangnam and many restaurants, shopping around
