Stayed 3 times at the Shilla, summary would be: best hotel in town. Service is fantastic, efficient, fast and friendly. Breakfast is, by far, the best I've had in hotels. Free shuttle to some famous districts. Rooms very well equipped and great decoration. Stay at the Shilla, you can't go wrong!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

This was my first visit and stay at the Shilla in Seoul, having been to the city for a few times now. I had always been staying at the Hyatt Regency (excellent and well located near to Itaewon) or the Grand Hilton (horribly located in the middle of nowhere and very very average convention type hotel). I decided to try The Shilla after having spoken to a few friends who had stayed here before. All the comments given by them were spot on, including the "downsides".

The hotel location is near to the Dong-guk University Subway Station. There is a frequent hotel shuttle bus that takes you there. From there, there is easy access to all the important tourist areas. The Myeong-dong shopping belt is also not far off.

Upon entering the hotel's magnificent and admittedly ostentatious main lobby, you first notice that all the staff are impeccably and very formally dressed, extremely polite and attentive. Then the main showpiece of the hotel lobby strikes you - the boldly designed hanging crystals which sparkle like nothing you've ever seen. This is the first sign as to why The Shilla positions itself as THE premier hotel address in Seoul.

The hotel itself is rather old and dated in terms of the external design. However, that should not matter much. It is an old hotel - owned by the Samsung Family no less. However, a recent and complete internal refurbishment has made it modern and updated. The décor is simple, sophisticated and understated. No glaringly stark furniture. Everything is high quality wood based, with very straight and clean edges and lines.

Check-in was highly efficient, if not a bit "cold". The swimming pool / sauna / fitness centre is extensive, to say the least. I can imagine it being over-crowded in summer. Fortunately, I stayed in late autumn, which is not peak tourist season for Seoul.

Despite the presence of a typically loud and un-refined lot of unfashionable but rich tourists from China, the general ambience of the hotel was understated elegance and sophistication.

The room itself was pretty average in size. In fact, I thought the rooms I had in the other hotels in Seoul were larger for the same category type. Nonetheless, the new furnishings were well made and designed thoughtfully. The bed though could have been better - a bit too saggy for my liking and the pillows were way too soft. Then again, I know that these are all quite subjective.

The bathroom was probably one of the best I've had the fortune of using in a hotel. Spacious and a good sized shower / bathing area. The one disturbing / irritating thing was the new Japanese style WC toilet bowls. I was careful in using the WC, but it still kept getting "stuck". Clearly, the designer did not consider the practical importance of a strong suction and flushing system. So my strong advice to the hotel management is to review this as it was embarrassing for me to keep calling the housekeeping / service staff to come to unclog the outlet.

Breakfast was superb - too much food of course and great variety. I did not try eating other meals in the hotel but I understand that the hotel has a very high end and reputable Chinese restaurant.

All in all, this hotel is truly in a class of its own. Superb service, sophisticated and modern. However, the steep pricing is certainly a bit of a "turn-off" and in today's price conscious travelers, I'm not sure if the high pricing of the rooms is the right strategy for now.

The hotel and rooms are beautiful. Get an executive floor room and enjoy great breakfasts and a happy hour with fantastic food in the evening from 6:00 to 10:00. Now, the reasons I give it 3 stars instead of 5 are price and service. I have spent a comparable amount on hotel rooms that were very large compared to our room at the Shilla. The hotel's restaurants are good (no complaints about the food) but ridiculously overpriced! When we arrived, they were supposed to check us in at our room or the executive lounge. Instead, we stood at the counter trying to make the staff understand that we had booked an Executive Business Deluxe room. We were told we could not use the executive lounge because we had reserved a cheaper room. The printed confirmation stated specifically the type of room we had booked but they wouldn't acknowledge it. I asked for the manager and after about 15 minutes of unnecessary conversation she admitted they had made a mistake. And lastly, all of the executive lounge staff were very good with the exception of two male employees who were very arrogant. My wife and I were always well dressed and very polite so I'm not sure what that was all about. If not for the front desk and executive lounge staff issues, I would have rated this hotel slightly higher.

The hotel is amazing. Impeccable service and hospitality everywhere you turn. The rooms are reasonable and incredibly well appointed. The only thing to watch out for is the food. I am sure it's amazing - but the prices are tremendous and definitely drive the hotel to be the most expensive in the area. Highly recommended for a stay in Korea.

We make one or two trips to Seoul each year.On every visit we make sure and reserve an evening at the Shilla buffet. They have cheese, fruit, Korean, Jampanese, Chinese, and American food. From excellent large crab legs to escargot, Peking Duck to lasagne, they have it all. In addtiion to seemingly endless food choices, they also have outstanding desserts. The hot chocolate mousse, dark and white chocolate, ice cream, and various cakes and pastries complete the evening. The atmosphere is calm, lighting is perfect and each time we have eaten there the food quality has been outstanding.

Room Tip: Make reservations for dinner several days in advance it you are planning to dine on a weekend.
