This hotel is a great choice for travellers seeking a good value choice in Gangnam. The staff are amazing! Helpful, courteous and friendly. Need some milk for your tea? No problem and no charge. Rooms are small but comfortable. The hotel is close to transport including the airport shuttle bus. A range of cafés nearby is another bonus. I recommend this hotel for those looking for a good value and hospitable hotel in Gangnam.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the hotel was. Ibis is a mid-level brand with a focus on budget, so I wasn't expecting fancy soaps, over-attentive bellboys, or miscellaneous little luxuries. Nevertheless, the rooms were very clean, the views were great, the TV had lots of channels, the staff were friendly and wanted to help (esp. the shuttle bus driver) and the hotel was quite attractive inside and out. I was surprised to see some nice decorations in the hallway. It's a cut above most IBIS hotels I've stayed at, more at level of Mercure or (almost) Novotel. For me, it's a good compromise.

To/from airport: Everyone mentions the KAL express bus, which is extremely convenient and currently about 15 USD (16k KRW). It took exactly 60 minutes once I got on (at night). It goes directly from arrivals to the hotel and the seats are very comfortable - don't think of it as a bus, but a sort of large limousine. You can get there much more cheaply by train (only 4-5 USD total) with one transfer (Mangwon, 26 stops) or two transfers (e.g., Seoul station and then Sadan, ~20 stops). Having done it, though, I can see why people recommend the bus. Metro takes more time (more like 100 minutes total), involves much more walking (up/down many escalators, transferring, getting/from hotel), and takes more energy to figure out. But it was ok for me on the return because I had checked in my luggage and used the return trip to go on a little city tour.

Location is the key thing, and I'd say this one is pretty good. There is a very nice bakery and two minimarts very nearby, so that's a good start, plus much more. The metro is close enough and they offer a shuttle to it hourly in case you don't want to walk. Near that metro there is a place where you can check in for your flights (at least on select airlines like KAL and Asiana), get rid of your luggage, and spend a little extra time in the city. There's also the big COEX mall, but that is supposedly mostly closed due to construction until Nov 2014.

Minor quibbles: Some of the staff members didn't speak especially good English, but we got by and this is Korea. The bed was unexpectedly hard. I like firm, but this one was a step beyond that and I could see it being a problem for some people. Having said that, I slept soundly.

note: I gave the hotel 5 stars not because it's a 5-star hotel per se, but because it deserves 5 stars for its category/cost.

Stayed two nights in a twin-room. (2 single beds)

Check in went smoothly, staff gave us a hotel suite in the corner, on level 12, (highest non-smoking floor). The view was great with the Christmas lighting on the streets below! (apologies as I forget the room number)

Bathroom/shower is small but well laid-out, and about the right size for a couple. The room also had a small couch-like sitting area next to the table which was perfect for 2 people to review travel photos. The facilities such as free wi-fi, gym and cheap coin laundry was also a refreshing, down to earth experience compared to their sister hotel in Seoul (Grand Ambassador) who don't have 2/3 of those things.

There is also a shuttle bus stop to Incheon airport just across the street. Tickets can be purchased from the reception counter.

The location is also quite convenient to go clubbing at Octagon/Ellui, etc by taxi. However if you plan on taking the subway, it is ~7 minute walk to the closest stations at Seolleung or Samseong.

Room Tip: For non-smokers, try and get a corner room on Level 12, facing the same direction as the entrance.

Day 2 of 8 day stay. Will not be going back for breakfast buffet. Its terrible! Day 1 overcooked bacon, day 2 raw. Both egg choices cold. Even asking and waiting almost 10 minutes for the chef, he had to deliver cold hard eggs!? Bread is old and crusty, plus a small variety.
My room, tiny as it is, has not dropped below 75f even with the window open to the winter 27f wind. Uncomfortable! Its also too small to spread out and work.
The hotel is clean. The staff is friendly after being engaged, they don't initiate. Theres no bellhop, youre on your own wuth the bags. Overall im not happy and dread the rest if my stay.

At roughly $120 per night this is a good deal in Seoul Gangnam district. The lobby is nice and the location is walking distance to many great bars and cheap eats. It is a 15 minute walk to the subway station (Seolleung). The rooms are clean and there is a usable gym downstairs. Wifi is free and it is pretty fast.

The only negatives are that the rooms are a bit small (for NYC standards). The carpet and room colors made it seem "Motel" like. We were only the 4th floor and we thought our rooms and floor were smoke free. But we could still smell cigarette smoke creep into our rooms. When we informed the front desk, they said that the people can smoke inside the rooms if they wish.

Dear Don T

Thank you very much for sharing your comment regarding our hotel on Tripadvisor.
It is good to hear that you like our location and other facilities.

However the negatives, the size of the rooms is all same in Ibis hotels in worldwide. Ibis is a standard of business hotel providing limited service but clean and comfortable room with reasonable price. Compare to other 5 star hotels, our room is smaller than them. Please kindly understand the concept of Ibis hotels.

Regarding the smell of cigarette, I am very sorry for the inconvenience. As you know, 4th floor is "non smoking" floor. And we always ask the guests if they would like to stay in Smoking room or non smoking room when they make a reservation and reconfirm upon check in. Mostly those guests staying in non smoking room never smoke in their room but rarely there are some guests smoking in the room.
We will try to find smokers smoking in prohibited area so non smokers are not disturbed.

Thank you very much for staying with us and hope your next visit is better than previous one.

breakfast is very expensive.,there isn't continental breakfast.Breakfast is usuallly for korean taste and there isnt a variety of meat, especially for Muslim people. It was not worth the high price, and breakfast ends at 10 which made us rush and we couldnt enjoy our breakfast at all.

Dear sbirdal

Thank you very much for sharing your experience on Tripadvisor.

Regarding the breakfast, I feel sorry that your expectation was not met.
Our main breakfast buffet begins from 6:30am ~ 10:00am. However, small simple breakfast is availble from 4am~6:30am for those travellers who have to leave early and 10am~12am for those who woke up late. Even if you missed the main breakfast, you can still enjoy our late riser with reasonable price(5,500 KRW).

And regarding the meunus, as we have much more foreign guests than Korean guests, we provide more international food than Korean food. There are just 5 choices of Korean tastes.
However regarding the food for Muslim guests, we will consider to serve more food for them and try to meet Muslim guests' expectation.

We appreciate your sharing your concenrs and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future.
