My wife and I have been living in Seoul for three years, and although we have heard about Vatos many times from friends, we finally had the chance to taste for ourselves.
Service: We were there for a friends birthday party, and although we were late, they had the table setup and ready for our arrival. The staff sat us at our tables, started to pour water and took our drink orders. Drinks came about five minutes later. Despite a party of 15 people, I felt that the staff gave us each our own individual attention.
Food: I was skeptical about the idea of Korean-Mexican fusion, because I'm not really a fan of Korean food, but I was pleasantly surprised how the flavors complimented each other. For an appetizer, we had the Kimchi fries. Any friend who has gone to Vatos always recommends the kimchi fries. We got an order to split for my wife and myself. The portion was more than enough for both of us. Its got some kick. If you are not a fan of spicy food, I would advise to stay away from the kimchi fries. Now, that said, I've got a pretty low tolerance for heat. Despite the heat, it does not overwhelm the flavors, and actually brings out the sweetness of the pork in the fries.
Kimchi fries rating: 10/10
For our mains, we both had the Galbi tacos. The meat was a little too well done for my liking, but it still held the sweetness of the Galbi. The Korean salad on top was cabbage and red onions and they were proportioned well with the Galbi. It wasn't and overwhelming flow of vegetables, which I hate when I'm eating a taco. I went to go right for the heart of the taco, the meat and not have to chomp through a salad to get there. My only complaint was that the portions were small. For 9000W, I was expected a big, two-handed taco like something you get at Tomatillos, but instead they were bite-sized portions. To give an example, I ate through all three tacos in 8 bites. That said, i would go back and get them again, because although small, were absolutely delicious.
Finally, still being hungry, I order an pork sandwich. It was great, really nice shreds of pulled pork piled high. It was 11000W and was worth every penny. It was stacked high and came with a side order of fries. It had much better value than the tacos in my opinion.
Pork sandwich: 10/10
Value: As I stated earlier, I felt there was good value in the pork sandwich and the kimchi fries. However, I felt that the tacos were lacking in value, but were still delicious.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere is great. We were there with about 15 people, some were dressed more formal, I was dressed in jeans and a sweater, both styles could fit. Its not a snotty or pretentious, but I wouldn't want to go in with ripped jeans and a t-shirt.
I could see a person taking a date here for the first time. Its nice and casual, but clean and modern.
Final verdict: Kind of upset with myself for waiting three years to go to Vatos. We will definitely be back and ready to try more from the unique fusion menu.
