“Worthwhile visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2013

One can really sense the extend of the Jewish diaspora visiting this synagogue. So far from their homeland yet keeping the Jewish traditions alive. It never ceases to amaze me. The synagogue is simple with stained glass windows, a torah room and two levels for the worshippers which are all well kept up by Mr. Samuels . There is a brief description of the history of the current synagogue along with photos on the premises. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. A worthwhile visit to another Jewish outpost.

“Don't miss this!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2013

We are so glad we had the opportunity to visit the Synagogue and meet Mr.Samuels. We learned about its history and the current status. The Synagogue is in beautiful condition. I only regret we did not know of the cemetery as that would have been interesting as well.

“Beautiful and touching”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

Do not miss this wonderfully preserved synagogue in predominantly Buddist country. We were deeply touched by Moses Samuel tour of the temple and wished we could stay longer.

“Outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

I learnt about the synagogue when reading "Älmost Englishmen", Ruth Cernea's excellent account of the Baghdad Jews in Rangoon and could not resist the anomaly of a synagogue close to the Arab quarter of a predominantly Buddhist city.
I recommend a visit to anyone interested in anomalies and history. We were warmly welcomed by Mr Moses Samuels who cares lovingly for the building. We explained that we did not share his faith but Mr Samuels assured us we were welcome to view the treasures of the synagogue.
We also saw several of the establishments owned and operated by Jewish families in pre-WWII Rangoon on our walking tour. For this I recommend the route given by Lonely Planet supplemented by an excellent article by Sarah Rooney on “Rangoon colonial architecture" available on the net. Google the title and author's name.

“Hidden treasure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

A walk through teeming streets leads to a hidden treasure . Outside you see a Star of David and inside there is an amazingly well preserved synagogue . Moses Samuel gave us a wonderful tour inspite of his throat infirmity. Well worth a visit. Open 10-12am
