“Pleasant hotel in Yangon, near the Shwedagon Pagoda”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

We stayed here for two nights in July. We found it to be clean and the staff helpful. It was conveniently located near the Shwedagon Pagoda and within walking distance to a number of restaurants. We especially liked the new Indian restaurant right next door, the Coriander Leaf. My only critique- no internet in the rooms and they charged for it in the lobby.

A fine hotel for business travellers, but not for tourists, who want more ambience. The restaurant was over-priced and the buffet platters were often empty and cold. The wifi didn't work that well. The pool was small. They contract out the spa, and we truly disliked the massages. As I look at this site post-facto, I wish we had insisted on the Governor's Residence. Pricier but more memorable.

After a very long flight, this hotel provided all the basic amenities plus. Pool looked very inviting but did not have time. Convenient, easy walk to the Shwedagon Pagoda -one of the main Yangon tourist attractions. Staff very helpful. Had absolutely delicious meal in the recently opened Coriander Leaf, next door to hotel. Very clean Indian restaurant, excellent veggie food - delicious!

This is a top end hotel in Yangon, Myanmar and as expected, is an international hotel. The location is good and the reception very efficient. The rooms conform to Western standards and are spacious.
The view from the top floors is superb.
There is an efficient business centre with internet connection.
The bar and the restaurant are good but be prepared for the delay as staff tend to be concerned with the cumbersome paperwork in billing.
As is the case elsewhere in Myanmar, credit/debit cards are NOT accepted and be prepared to pay in US Dollars.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Pagoda.

We stayed in this hotel as part of a package tour we took throughout Myanmar. It is a very clean, business class hotel with a lovely pool, gym, and a great buffet breakfast. The rooms are a little dated (Remember, this is Myanmar) but the lobby and the rest of the hotel are lovely. They have a good selection of newspapers you can read in the lobby and on the weekends, they have live music. The hotel is not within walking distance of the city but you can easily take a taxi for 2000 kyat (about 2 dollars) to get there. If you want to eat locally the restaurant in the hotel is quite good, and there is also a great Indian restaurant and a few other restaurants and coffee shops within 100 yards or as you exit the hotel to the left. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They do not have free wifi but you can purchase a ticket for $10 to use wifi for 24 hours. Overall after staying in several other hotels throughout the country this was our most comfortable and favorite place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Schwedegon Pagoda

There is so much to say about this hotel that I don't really know where to start.

Rooms:
Bleak. The rooms are OLD - as is the carpet, the bathroom decor, the bed...oh my god, the bed. Soft and saggy. Awful. I asked for a harder bed but only got a wooden plank put under the sheet...which was like sleeping on a board. They didn't have harder (newer) mattresses because as the receptionist told me "our hotel is very old now".
While everything works, the room is not pleasant. Dull upholstery and grimy carpet make me wonder what's living in there. The housekeeping staff do clean every day but somethings (like carpet stains) need deeper cleaning. I would not suggest walking barefooted on those carpets.
The bathroom is beige and while the walls are designed to look like stone, they are all just plastic. So is the bathtub - plastic. Not the sort of tub you want to relax in.

The Restaurant:
Nothing special at all. Certainly does not warrant the prices you pay for. The breakfast buffet is mediocre and I am sure that the juice is not real fruit juice. The chocolate in the chocolate croissants certainly does not taste like chocolate. Once I missed breakfast and asked for a banana and was refused. A banana at 10:45 - refused because breakfast was over at 10:30. This is not the behaviour of a supposedly 4 star hotel.
Be care of the crockery - I have found dirty plates and bowls. The selection is just okay - but I am not sure that it serves Western tastes. Things look right (the French toast, the pancakes) but they just don't taste right.
The Summit Parkview boasts the worst cappuccino in Yangon.

The gym:
Nothing modern about the gym. There are 5 treadmills but only 2 are newish. The other 3 are delapidated (as in things peeling off; one is even rusted). Everything is very old school and damp smelling. I would not step into that changing room or the steam room if you paid me to. There is an ellipitical machine which does not work and the staff do not have any idea when that machine will be working again. A very sad gym indeed.
I tried to go in the early morning hours but as the gym is open to the general public, all machines were taken. The locals have a system whereby they guard the machines for each other, notifying friends when they are about to finish. This way, they pass on the machine from one person to another - leaving an outsider stranded. I heard a Myanmar man tell a foreigner that the foreigners were not welcome. Given the fact that the gym is also open to the public at all hours (and not just at off peak hours) means that hotel guests do not have priority to the machines.

The staff:
I am not sure the staff understand the meaning of international service. They don't speak much English and are not particularly pleasant. I noticed that one of the managers was not wearing any socks with his uniform - that is hardly the sort of thing one expects to see in a 4 star hotel.

I guess I have to put in something positive:
- The pool was decent. Not very long but given the state of the gym, it was welcomed.
- Laundry was done quickly (albeit expensive)
- there are two places to change money among the shops. The one on the right (when you're walking towards them) gives a slightly better service
- the towels were new and fluffy.

Overall:
I am only staying here because the company I work for is too cheap to put us anywhere else. Given that the Summit Parkview charges $60 a night, I think that they need to seriously rethink the price or the quality of the hotel. Given the new dawn in Myanmar and the prime location of the Summit Parkview, this hotel has a lot of work to do yet.
