We spent four nights at the Central Hotel in October. There were three of us, and we were given a large room with one double bed, one single and a table & chairs. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the table got used frequently to eat the street food that we would bring back to the hotel. The room looked dated but it was very clean. The bathroom also looked dated, with some repairs to the tile work. Since we weren't paying luxury prices we didn't expect a luxury room. There are 2 updated elevators and the air conditioning worked even during blackouts (which were frequent during our stay.)
The location was excellent as we were able to walk to many of our destinations, such as the Sule Pagoda, the Strand hotel, the old parts of the city and the Scott market. It was also easy to get taxis to further destinations. After seeing the buses in Yangoon I knew that I couldn't use the local public transportation, although younger more agile tourists could manage. Taxis were very reasonably priced anyway.
Breakfast is included and is served in the lobby restaurant. It appears that it was recently remodeled, and is open later in the day for breakfast and lunch. The choice of foods at breakfast was very varied and catered to a wide variety of tastes/nationalities. There were several evenings when I didn't want to out with my traveling companions and I ate dinner in the restaurant. The food and service were very good.
What stood out at the hotel was the attitude of the staff. Everyone was gracious and willing to do anything within reason to make our stay more enjoyable. For example, one day my son brought food back to the hotel from a local indian restaurant. The dals were in plastic bags, and the restaurant manager gave him bowls and cutlery to take up to our room.
There might still be some rooms where smoking is allowed so inquire about that when making a reserva...
