Be warned that if you make advance reservations for Park Royal Yangon, you cannot be assured that you will receive the room that you booked. They may give it away to someone else even though you have a booked reservation, and then act like it's no big deal - maybe it's that usual for them that they really think it is no big deal. Then they will lie to you and try to scam you and offer you no restitution for any of it. The hotel itself is of varying quality depending on the room you get, but the service and management is abysmal, especially for a supposedly 5-star hotel.
We booked an Orchid Club Studio well in advance, and received a confirmation from Park Royal. After standing in line waiting for check-in for quite a long time, when we finally got up to the desk, we were informed that we had to go to the 8th floor to check in and the front desk couldn't check us in. Irritated, we went to the 8th floor, where all the Orchid Club Rooms and the Club Lounge are located, to check in. We were checked in without a problem, but given a room on the 3rd floor. We didn't understand why we were on the 3rd floor when all signs in the hotel indicated all the Orchid Club Rooms were on the 8th floor, but we were too tired to think much about it at the time.
As we opened the door to our 3rd floor room (which unlike all the Orchid Club rooms did not say "Orchid Club" on the door), we were slammed by an overwhelming fragrance of air freshener, we couldn't even breathe. Then we walked into the room and realized that it reeked of cigarette smoke, and they'd just sprayed the freshener to cover it up and hope we wouldn't notice. It was unmistakable, the bathroom was disgusting smelling, with the mirror rusting through the reflective surface. The whole room appeared to be 40 years old, stale, dark and ancient. Certainly not what we would expect for well over $300 a night. I tried to log on to the internet to see what an Orchid Club Studio looked like, but the advertised wi-fi did not work at all. Later I saw that it looked nothing like the room we were in, but looked exactly like the real Orchid Club Studios.
I called them right away and asked to be moved to the non-smoking room we'd booked. They lied and told me the room I was in was non-smoking. I said "Then why is there a Park Royal ashtray right here on the desk?". Then they hung up on me. We went upstairs to insist that we be moved to an Orchid Club Room that we booked, and they lied again and insisted the room that we were in was an Orchid Club Studio and that they had these rooms on every floor, not just the 8th floor. When questioned why it looked nothing like the photos, why it didn't say Orchid Club on the door like all the rest of them, and why all the signs said the 8th floor was the Orchid Club rooms, they repeated the lie about all floors having these rooms. Clearly they'd used this line many times before to unsuspecting guests.
I insisted that it was clear I was not in an Orchid Club Studio, and I was not going to accept the disgusting, dark, dingy, smoke-and-lysol room that they'd given me. They said sorry, we have no other rooms. It wasn't until I picked up my phone and started calling Traders Hotel that an Orchid Club Room magically came open. They later admitted they'd given our room away to someone else, and now they had only a regular room and not a Studio, priced $38.00++ less than the Studio. However, not only did they refuse any offer of restitution for all of the hassle, room changes, and the inconvenience of having to switch rooms after the first night, but they decided they would only discount my rate by $7.00 despite the room I was being forced to stay in now being about $40 cheaper than the one I'd booked.
Upon check-out, I asked that they at least discount the room by the $38 difference between the rooms that I'd just verified again on their website. They again refused. Then they asked me to pay by credit card, which I did, but apparently their hotel cannot accept credit cards like some of the other hotels in town can - such as The Strand for example - and the staff was just not trained to know that, including the duty manager. I tried three cards, none worked, so make sure to book in advance through Agoda and NOT through the Park Royal website so you can pay in advance, or bring loads of cash with you, if you're unfortunate enough to choose this hotel. After 40 minutes of screwing around, now late for our flight, I finally had to just give them my business card and a copy of my credit card and walked out. They had no idea what they were doing.
Other than the dishonest and incompetent management and check-in staff, our stay wasn't too bad. The real Orchid Club Rooms were renovated and comfortable. The wi-fi was constantly intermittent, very frustrating, so if you really have business to do, this isn't the hotel for you. The ethernet worked much better, still slow but at least stayed connected. The club lounge breakfast was just nasty, but luckily you could also go downstairs where the breakfast was good. The restaurants at the hotel were pretty good overall, and the rest of the service at the hotel was good. The club lounge served corked wine that they refused to throw out no matter how many people pointed that out, and then claimed they ran out of alternatives for at least 2 days. The staff in the lounge was rarely present, but friendly when they were.
We will not stay at Park Royal again, nor will our travel agency recommend it. We should have gone with our first instinct and checked out and gone over to Traders. We recommend that everyone else does the same. It's almost the same price, and Park Royal is run nothing like a 5-star hotel worthy of hundreds of dollars a night.
Only book an Orchid Club room, and ensure you get one - they are only on the 8th floor, anything els...
