“Good location, but has its problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2012

I booked this hotel on Agoda several months before my arrival. The reviews were good enough to book, so I took a chance.

From the outside, very nice looking and great location. Lobby is clean and very friendly staff. Rooms are also clean and beds are very comfortable. Strange musty smell in hotel and rooms. Found a lot of black mold spots around shower. Shower did leak all over the floor after use.

No hot water during my three day stay, hotel was unable to fix.

Overall, not a bad place, but stay at your own risk if you have any health problems.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 605. Mold present and no hot water.

The design of the hotel is not perfect (sometimes the shower leaks a little bit onto the toilet) but overall it is very clean and comfortable and for the moment, it is a very good choice for Yangon.

The breakfast was a la carte so they cook to order. However, it was slightly odd in that their banana pancake was just a pancake with a normal piece of banana. The dinner food that the cafe serves is quite ordinary.

The staff are friendly and helpful.

This hotel is booked out even in low season! Their rates are cheaper if you book through an agent (in low season, direct booking is 60USD, through an agent it was 55USD). I believe agents get priority in bookings.

The location is excellent and all taxi drivers know this hotel. Many tour operators book their clients into this hotel.

There was a few power outages but nothing serious. The TV only has 10 channels but it does have CNN.

Very nice hotel. Wonderful breakfast and they will make a to go box if you leave very early. The only caveat is the back side where I stayed (804) has only a prison like small window. The room is dark at nite. Very very friendly staff, very clean and looks remodeled in each room. Great bed and nice 'sharp' tv mounted on the wall. No refrig but a refrig in the hall for cold water etc. Small coffee maker in the room. All the free bottled water you want to drink is a nice feature for sure.
Fantastic location near Sule temple.
Highly recommend for about $55 a nite in late June 2012.

Room Tip: Maybe the front side is noisy but the back side has only a small prison like window at least in the...

Our room had a view and it was clean and very comfortable. I noticed that the floor was not perfect and design is simple but i know I am not in a 5-star hotel so it's not a concern. All my requirements were delivered - clean room, clean bathroom, air conditioner is functioning well, location is excellent, limited but good breakfast, great staff and very helpful and the rate is very reasonable. Wifi is for free - a bit slow just like most of the wifi places in Yangon but it's okay. I actually noticed that our bedsheets were nice (just like in 5 star hotels). We had a noodle soup once and it was excellent!
We almost bought a painting that is displayed on our floor (7th floor) but we needed the cash for Bagan as there is no ATM in Burma.
I hope this hotel can maintain its cleanliness and improve whatever is lacking.

The hotel was in a very good location. Just down the street from the Sule Pagoda. The hotel is directly across the street from the Trader hotel. Every cab driver knows where the Trader hotel is so if they aren't familiar with the East just tell them to take you to the Trader. The restaurant in the lobby was pretty good. Free breakfast which I enjoyed. Nice atmosphere plenty Myanmar beer. The staff were very nice. Free Wifi plus they had a couple computers available in the lobby. The rooms were decent, clean and the bed was comfortable. The room had a coffee maker on a shelf with a three prong plug but the outlet in the location was a two prong. To use the coffee maker, I had to stack my backpack on top of a chair and other items to reach the only three prong jack in the room which was located by the bathroom light switch. Typical issues you will encounter while in Myanmar. There were some complaints from other guests about issues with their rooms such as backed up water in the shower. The first night I was there I had no hot water. The staff fixed the problem the next day. Over all the hotel is decent. If you have questions about my Burma experience feel free to contact me. I have many pictures from my trip which included Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan. I can dial you in on FB.

Room Tip: I like staying on the back of hotels to avoid traffic noise but the view isn't very good.

Stayed for three nights, price reasonable, room whilst not luxurious has all of the basics together with a dose of "style". Free wifi reasonable fast and reliable. Breakfast more than adequate. But it was the staff that made the difference, every question they were asked they answered with a smile and were genuinely very helpful. Only downside is the often mentioned lack of toilet door - not great when you are sharing a room. Would fully recommend the East Hotel.

My friend and I visited Myanmar because of a course we took in university. While we went there with an open mind, we were extremely pleased to see that the hotel that we have booked is more than what we expected. Though we wondered about the designer's choice of toilet furnishings, the aircon was alright, except on the first day, one room flooded a little because the drain wasn't working properly (shower in room 703)

Apart from that, we stayed in the room below that on our fourth day and everything was good. The reception is good, as well as the breakfast which I found acceptable.

Overall, good hotel to stay at.
