I stayed at White House Hotel for five days over Christmas 2012. I'd been meeting people elsewhere in Myanmar who had recommended it. I arrived at 5am and got a room, no. 303, 30 dollars a night, one person in a windowless double room with attached bathroom. Good aircon and hot shower. There were over 100 steps to the top floor. Mine was on the second floor. Good views from the roof garden, towards the Pagoda to the north and the river to the south.
Great convivial atmosphere here, very helpful manager and 20 people working hard to make the place an obvious success. They hit on the idea of Best Breakfasts ten years ago and what a success it is. You could easily spend an hour and a half at breakfast, going back for more and chatting to other guests. The owner's wife has a repertoire of 500 home-made breakfast dishes, of which maybe ten are on offer each day, plus seasonal fruits, delicious juice, good bread toasted on a wood-fired toaster, tea and coffee, banana pancakes, fried potatoes, all freshly prepared. Oh, how I miss those breakfasts! Yangon is a great place, lots of good eateries, lovely lassi and biryani houses nearby. The manager arranged a 5am taxi to the airport for me for 7000 kyat. I really didn't want to go home.
I've been to 51 countries now, and this was one of those classic hotels that make travelling such a wonderful experience. I doubt if you'll get a better breakfast anywhere for this price.
